@bmeade
Thanks @tjdett
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@LvanderWerff Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. There are nightly builds of Slicer on each of the test compute nodes.
Louise van der Werff
@LvanderWerff
Thanks @tjdett, no worries for the delay. I might have a play over the weekend :)
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
Load time seems worse in the nightly, but I could be wrong about that.
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@pmignone I've created a pre-built Blender image and loaded it onto slicer-test-4c. No real difference between it and the install script version except for having proper menu items.
Louise van der Werff
@LvanderWerff
Hey @tjdett neither Paul or I can access the Slicer-1C or Slicer-2C compute nodes at the moment. The Slicer-4C node is working ok. Have you changed something recently?
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@LvanderWerff I've restarted those two compute nodes now. I'm not sure why they went offline (something I might look into further if they do it again, or when I'm back in the office) but they're back up and running.
I've loaded the Blender image onto all three, along with Slicer (stable & nightly).
Let me know if there's anything more you need. I might not be quick to respond, but I'll do what I can.
Louise van der Werff
@LvanderWerff
Thanks @tjdett

@tjdett
@pmignone I was feeling a bit better today, so I put together a new Octave 4.0 image based on the improvements I've made for the Slicer & Blender images. It's on slicer-test-4c (mainly so I don't have to worry about disk space). Could you provide @KerryHalupka with access details so that she's able to check it out?
Paul Mignone
@pmignone
Sure I'll do it at gardening tomorrow.
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
Much appreciated Paul.

@DFFlanders
Wondering what status is for channels like this a la slack?
Paul Mignone
@pmignone
So were migrating every convo over to slack then?
Damien Irving
@DamienIrving
@DFFlanders @pmignone At this stage we are trialling Slack for internal ResCom communications only. All other channels (dit4c, external ResBaz) remain unchanged on gitter.
Paul Mignone
@pmignone
@DamienIrving cool
Paul Mignone
@pmignone
@tjdett FYI Blender is working quite well in the 4cpu container. No issues so far.
@tjdett so...how 'game' are you to try it for Maya? ;-)
@tjdett Not a high priority by any means but it would be good to see how licensed modules fare on dit4c.
bmeade
@bmeade
@tjdett How hard would it be to get something like S2Plot into DIT4C? http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/s2plot/index.php?title=S2PLOT:Installation
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@bmeade Best as I can tell, no more difficult than installing it on a local machine would be. The packaging for the software is extremely primitive though. Skim-reading the INSTALL.TXT suggests it's not going to be quick to do an install, though fortunately I'd only have to do this once.
Building the Underworld image was a good lesson of how much effort can be involved.
bmeade
@bmeade
@tjdett Apparently the installation is tricky enough that many researchers aren't making use of it. I could build it as a cloud image but I thought DIT4C might make more sense. What do you think?
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@bmeade I think long-term DIT4C makes more sense. In the short term the steps required to build a DIT4C image are much the same as building a VM image, so I think it's worth starting with the DIT4C image.
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@pmignone I'm not going to build a Maya image initially, because there's "secret" information in it that can't go on the public site I use for image distribution. In the meantime, use the install script, which I'll re-paste in private chat.
Use the X11 image as a base.
Paul Mignone
@pmignone
OK cool

Damien Irving
@DamienIrving
@tjdett You helped me setup an Octave environment a few months back for a paper I was reviewing. The authors have revised their submission and I need to re-test, but it seems my jors_review container is now inactive?
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@DamienIrving Which compute node? There were a few clean-ups post-ResBaz, and it's possible your container became collateral damage. If so, sorry about that. I can set you up with access to a new compute node with Octave available if that is the case.
Damien Irving
@DamienIrving
@tjdett The compute node is reviewer-node-01. No problems if it was collateral damage - there was nothing important on there, I just need access to Octave and also Mercurial (interestingly, it's the first software paper I've ever reviewed where the authors are using Mercurial/Bitbucket as opposed to git/GitHub or git/Bitbucket).
Damien Irving
@DamienIrving
@tjdett Cancel that request (sorry). I ended up using Octave on someone else's machine.
Damien Irving
@DamienIrving
@tjdett Is this still the place we should ask questions in the lead up to and during ResBaz 2017?
Tim Dettrick
@tjdett
@DamienIrving I'm happy with you asking questions on resbaz-team.slack.com for ResBaz 2017. That way everything is in the one place.
Michael Sumner
@mdsumner
@tjdett any chance I could use the dashboard to show the usage of DIT4C this afternoon? I can't find the link we had for it unfortunately
Huh, of course just now I found it easily! I'll try this out a bit today and hopefully demo it briefly this afternoon in a meeting, cheers
Michael Sumner
@mdsumner
looking good, this is working fine - thanks @tjdett
