I had worked on a product idea which never got implemented due to various operational issues. Basically it's a system to manage inventory for restaurants and create discounts by percentage on food items. The deals and offers are showcased on an Android device which is installed in cabs (this was the basic idea) in which entertainment content (either on the device or from a cdn, depends on the business owner and their strategy) is being played. The deals and offers are displayed location wise, so if the cab is moving towards the destination then it would grab all the offers nearby and display accordingly. So if a person interested in a deal can grab it by punching their phone no. or scanning a QR by following a link on the tablet. In this way they can use this deal any day they want if the deal isn't expired .
I am not working on this project now but i don't know what to do. It needs some minor changes and updates . I am thinking of making it open source or is there any better idea to sell it ?

I'm in a major city and I think I've seen geo-location-based advertising with FourSquared and other platforms. I think people were not too interested in getting push notifications.

@fsecada01 hii.. It is working mostly . Certain feature based changes are still pending that can be finished in 2-3 days of work
Its basically a Merchant Portal for restaurants to create and manage deals and inventory , Admin System for the owner of the app to make monitor and perform customer support, An Android App to consume deals

@thePercept I think the market for this kind of marketing is kind of niche and doesn't have a lot of traction. I think something a bit more rewarding would be to have a pre-payment platform where restauranteurs can just pay at the end of their meals automatically and then auto-load rebates/discounts based on some kind of Preferred Program.
Open Table has something similar by charging vendors for their SaaS platform while having patrons get a free service. I haven't seen their payment feature pushed that hard, so my guess is that you can differentiate your platform by making this a key feature.

@fsecada01 Well it wont send you push notification always. You as a customer can view the offers you grabbed and use it only when you want. There's no customer side Android app. Just a temporary account if you haven't signed up

@thePercept but the issue is that you have to have your customer base make an action to redeem a discount, so your userbase would be quite low.

@fsecada01 Yes, i had a customer app in pipeline but didn't worked on that . It was in our plans but for the MVP , we just thought of a simple account based page where a user can see all their deals. It was totally based on Ad-evenue. We would display pre-roll and post-roll ads of the people who want to do advetisement.

Having an inventory-based system where vendors can push dishes at a discount/specials of the day and having a per-diem for each pushed-item being chosen may be more fruitful, because it removes the activity from the user and forces vendors to marketize their offerings

I don't want to invest more time on that. I can only spend sometime to finish it completely, work on the pending features and i am done. Is there a way to sell this ? I believe it might be useful for someone ? I just hope that but not sure. Maybe i should put it on Git hub as a open source project or what ?

If you want to monetize this as a platform and get some angel-investment, then you should keep it private. If you want to have something with your name attached and take your hands off the finalized development, go open source.

I find that runserver hangs indefinitely when my django application tries to read a non-existent environment variable with os.environ['my-variable']. Is this expected behavior in django?

i've never experienced this, but it suggests that it hangs because of that failure. Perhaps very basic errors do not yield error messaging.

Try installing django-extensions and do 'manage.py runserver_plus'

I'm trying to write a view in my Django project to review email templates before sending. Does anyone have experience with this? I've installed django-templated-email and wagtails for my endeavor.
