Renato Gabriele
@remagio
;-)
plus other tools.
I lived in a few country but I think Italy, by example, is still in the early phase of analysis of socials.
I mean It's still used to support outside twitter points.
Ed Summers
@edsu
i think we all are still figuring out what social media means ; particularly in the political arena
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
yes, here I think there will be lots to learn b/c the entire smm community is involved in.
politics.
But happen something not possible in US.
The same persons create opinions using CnC plus consultants plus volunteer.
Ed Summers
@edsu
quick question: would it be ok if this search_archive.py wrote the data as gzip files?
or would it be easier if they are uncompressed to start with?
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
uncompressed better
Ed Summers
@edsu
ok
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
so using pipe it can be checked
Ed Summers
@edsu
zcat is nice on linux
zcat file.gz | grep foo
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
not yes used in bash scripts
Ed Summers
@edsu
but i'll leave it uncompressed for now
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
not yet
Ed Summers
@edsu
ok
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
but it could be when you think it's fine
i'm discussing with founders of http://www.journalismfestival.com how to approach some sessions about socials&politics
Ed Summers
@edsu
very nice
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
My last speech at HackMeeting14 was about how happened some dadaist performances on socials during last national and european election. Showing how some kinda "blacktop" works on socials.
Ed Summers
@edsu
dada++
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
"blackop"
Ed Summers
@edsu
what is "blacktop"?
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
blackop
Raised a fact, during previous election huge CnC where manipulation discussions
Specially during live TV events with candidates.
The dadaist performances planned to contrast and win.
it raised and showed up during live TV shows.
sorry "were" not "where" f**k automatic correction
Renato Gabriele
@remagio
(political smm+devs committees working like usually black-op does)
Bye @edsu, ttys
Ed Summers
@edsu
@remagio ok, give it a try utils/archive.py

Hello
I'm new here (first time ever I'm using gitter.im)

I have a small problem with twarc, not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's not finished yet: every I try to used twarc.py (or as a library), I get this error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
File "twarc.py", line 114, in init
raise argparse.ArgumentTypeError("Please make sure CONSUMER_KEY, CONSUMER_SECRET ACCESS_TOKEN and ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET environment variables are set.")
argparse.ArgumentTypeError: Please make sure CONSUMER_KEY, CONSUMER_SECRET ACCESS_TOKEN and ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET environment variables are set.

is it normal?
(I have edited twarc.py with correct keys from an app I created at dev.twitter.com
)
faustusdotbe
@faustusdotbe
Okay I forgot to set the environment variables, my bad...
Ed Summers
@edsu
I'm glad you figured it out ; since it took so long to respond. You can use command line parameters now too if you want.
edsu @edsu waves
Ed Summers
@edsu
v0.3.4 is out now ; only change was moving utils/archive.py to utils/twarc-archive.py and now installing it as part of pip install.
nbaur
@nbaur
Hi Ed finally got my twarc-archive.py script running with the following command line: nataliebaur$ twarc-archive.py semanaNT ~/semanaNT. apparently needed the little squiggly thing in front of the directory structure.
Ed Summers
@edsu
@nbaur The tilde is just shorthand for your home directory :-) So I guess you have a folder semanaNT in your home directory?
nbaur
@nbaur
@edsu yes it's in my home directory. i'm still learning the basics of command line :)
Ed Summers
@edsu
ok, definitely let me know of questions as they come up ; i expect you will want to schedule it to run periodically, or are you just going to run it manually?
