Ok it seems to have been
:background unspecified in the image attributes of the control icons.
The background was unspecified because
dap-ui-controls looks for the background attribute of the fringe face. Setting that attribute for the fringe face fixes the problem.
And I still have some little issues that I'd like to fix, but it shouldn't really matter for a first release

@yyoncho: are you able to put breakpoints inside java dependencies with dap-mode ? I've started working with Scala recently, and I think I can't do that in Scala but I'm not sure. I'd like to know if you're able to do that in Java at least before digging more
Like, if you have a project that depends on Akka, can you put a bp in the decompiled jar like IntelliJ does ? If not I'll just keep IJ as a debugger-only program, it really doesn't matter much; just trying to know if I missed something
for scala - I suggest either asking/searching in their repo or testing with vscode
it it works in vscode - we have to fix it on our side
also, I suggest trying to step through
