Ge Yang
@episodeyang
So some self intro: I am a graduate student at University of Chicago doing quantum computing. Just like you guys when you started!
James Allen
@jpallen
awesome - I never did anything nearly as useful or cool at grad school :)
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
sigh life is so hard
blob
so have you guys decided to get funding yet?
James Allen
@jpallen
nope, we've bootstrapped to where we are and aren't planning to raise money in the future
what's the plan with escherpad? are you looking to funding?
also, is it just you? or is there a wider team?
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Yep just me.
James Allen
@jpallen
wow, that's even more impressive :)
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Well having users would be truely impressive!
And I feel you guys did very well!
James Allen
@jpallen
thanks - have you considered taking down the beta-invite wall?
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
I am on a budget ec2 right now, so I am very worried about capacity.
James Allen
@jpallen
make it easier to users to try it out (I'm still not exactly sure what I'd use this for, but am definitely keen to try it out - if I was a regular user you'd probably have lost me at this point :( )
ah ok, yea, that's tricky
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
I see I see
Beni Cherniavsky-Paskin
@cben
recommendation: make it easy to deploy one's own kernel as a terminal.com template ("snap"). terminal.com is the least-friction I can think of: takes seconds to sign up & clone a VM there, pricing is reasonable, auto-suspend and on-the-fly resizing mean you use your balance effectively.
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
@cben, holly shit thanks!!!
this is really helpful!!

@cben

Q about prior art:
You've made a real-time collaborative Jupyter notebook.
DataJoy are working on one.
Jupyter got funding this July and a major part of their proposal is real-time colaboration on notebooks, which they describe as very non-trivial.
Yet SageMath Cloud has had collaborative notebooks (both sage and ipython) since at least 2013 — though it only became open source in late 2014.

It seems at least the open source efforts should talk together...

Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Haha there is also google coLab. The technology is going to be commoditized in a year or two.
The goal is to be useful to people, so that people can do what they care about, and not worry about tools!
Daniel Kirsch
@kirel
Hi there. This looks like an interesting project. How does this work? You run escherpad and I run the Jupyter Server? Is escherpad not FOSS? Can I run my own?
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Hi Kirel,
@kirel Escherpad is a real-time client for Jupyter, and it allows you to connect to your own jupyter servers.
It lives in your browser, and it uses our real-time collaborative backend to synchronize multiple sessions.
Like github, the service itself is not open-source but I do opensource a lot of the core modules under the escherpad organization on github.
So Escherpad manages all of your collaborator's user authentications for the notebooks, and provides a sharable url for every document you edited.
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
@kirel btw I really enjoyed detexify!! It's seriously an honor to see you here ^_^
Daniel Kirsch
@kirel
Ok, understood. And detexify is simple in comparison to what you are doing here :P. Looking forward to try it.
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Thanks:) looking forward to that too :D
Gianluca Rigoletti
@themutt
Hi all, I found escherpad due to the struggle of writing collaborative jupyter notebooks with my collegues. I signed up for a beta invite, but I would like to know if it is possible to get an invite now. Thank you! :smile:
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Hi Gianluca, Sorry I was traveling
I will try to launch a new version in a few weeks
@themutt I was rebuilding from scratch. Almost done.
Gianluca Rigoletti
@themutt
Ok, thank you! So I just need to wait?
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
yeah!
@themutt also, what are you using Escherpad for, and what kind of work are you doing?
Matthew Walker
@mattgwwalker
Hi! That video you have of collaborative Jupyter notebook editing is exactly what I was hoping to find. I've signed up for the beta, but like @themutt I would love to be able to try it out today ;o) I'm planning to teach to about five-or-so students in September, and I'd love to be able to code and document collaboratively with them.
Leopoldo Corona
@leopoloco_twitter
Collaborative Jupyter notebook is awesome! I'd love to try it out ASAP! please!
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Thanks Leo, I'm working on this:D
ametersky
@ametersky
any word on a release date for the beta?
Ciprian Tomoiaga
@cipri-tom
this is awesooome! Please let us run it, even in the current state :D. Promise not to complain :)
Ciprian Tomoiaga
@cipri-tom
@episodeyang would it be possible to give this a try ? I would even help with maintaining :smile:
Andreas
@0708andreas
+1 @cipri-tom, it would be awesome to self-host this. Would also help relieving your servers ;). If that's currently out of scope, I would very much like to try this ASAP, so I hereby request access as your helpdesk suggests. My name's Andreas Poulsen, I'm reachable via email: bpoudev@gmail.com. Thanks a bunch for your awesome work, Ge Yang, this just might turn out to be the next LaTex :D
Ciprian Tomoiaga
@cipri-tom
@0708andreas agreed! Though it would probably make installation more difficult, I would be happy to host it myself.
Please, @episodeyang , let us use it
Ge Yang
@episodeyang
Hey guys! My friends and I are rebuilding Escherpad with React, Spark and HBase as the backend!
The front-end now lives under my blog https://www.episodeyang.com/gittor/
I did not pay for SSL certificate so there is a warning in Chrome. However the https is required inorder for it to integrate with DropBox.
