Sorry, I will be back in a min

won't bore you with lore details but basically this is the comment

lawrence schick agreeing that eso has placed eastmarch/the rift wrong and that it is deleting one of morrowind's cities (blacklight) which is currently overwritten by eso's placement of skuldafn on the map

lore excuse: nords dum, make bad maps
but it effects gameplay as until zos fix this map, they have deleted 1 of morrowind's cities, and the whole eastern arm of morrowind (think of the dlcs!)

sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
ok. then let me revise my statement. what if both of these maps are inaccurate? ^^
maybe something that exists is missing on the old map too?
(even if it's not in the games yet)

anthology was re-released as of 2020 officially as part of some elder scrolls anniversary thing, it came out in 2014, same time as eso, and is still the official "de-facto" map that bethesda use to portray tamriel

@Baertram

lore excuse: nords dum, make bad maps

lol

I consider it's just a matter of mead
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
anyway dont want to bog down the issue in dense lore discussions, just the fact that geographically the map in eso does not line up with reality (you can see this yourself .. go to northern most point of eastmarch, you should be able to swim to that northern island but you cannot (it does not appear)
sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
(it's called mead in english)

@Baertram
Oh right
Thank you

So here's what I can do... I will write up a ticket, citing your addon, with a description along the lines of, "Discuss the inconsistency aspect re: actual world positions aligning with map positions." ...if my main takeaway from what you have done here is correct? I am doubtful that Worldbuilding will consider redoing the design of the zones, POI positions, etc., but maybe there are improvements on the tech side that can be made? I need to look more deeply into what you've done here.

@ZOSCardinal05

my other half (the map graphics artist, i am just the coder) is asking that the forum thread for our addon ( https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/606902/the-map-has-been-fixed-we-hope-zos-sees-this-and-takes-inspiration/p1 ) is submitted in the ticket along with our addon link as it explains in more detail what needs to be fixed on the artist side (for the map), the addon description also has these details but cant hurt to have both

really appreciate that you're willing to make a ticket for this.. the roleplay community has been spamming forums since launch asking for a fix but seems to have been talking to a wall for years

FYI i fully expect that worldbuilding team won't be willing to physically alter the zones (it's been 8 years since base game), but things like craglorn and vvarfdenfell could probably be moved/resized ui-side with little issue (as my addon does)
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
eastmarch-rift-stonefalls-shadowfen are kindof deadlocked together since they are physically connected in the worldspace when they shouldn't be, but other parts of the map can still be fixed with some adjustment
sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
"little issue" still means it messes with everyones saved data...
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]

assuming that they rely on global positioning, yes

but i mean there is no physical connection to those zones, one is an island and one is inside a canyon, they can be moved on map without having to get other teams at zos involved probably.. just a ui thing

ZOSDanBatson
@ZOSDanBatson
The UI team does not have the authority to move things like that. We create the tech the world builders use. This would be something you'd need to discuss in the regular forums. UI can't do this.
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
can you not put in a ticket to the relevant team (i dont know how the internals work)
sirinsidiator @sirinsidiator imagines that would start a war between UI team and world builders and they'd start hunting each other's team members with nerf guns as a result
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]

you'd need to discuss in the regular forums

we personally made 4 forum posts over the past year. others have posted since launch, its never been commented on by someone at zos

ZOSDanBatson
@ZOSDanBatson
It wouldn't be appropriate. The best we can do is mention to them that you mentioned the inconsistency. But it's not really a "bug" or a "ticket"
This was the decision they made, and it's their decision to make, not up to UI
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
who would be the appropriate team then
fully aware that no one at the company wants to be told "you done your worldbuilding job wrong" but.. the current map deletes space for dlc, no way around it unless it is fixed
ZOSDanBatson
@ZOSDanBatson
If we open a ticket, they will close the ticket as working as designed, and then tell us not to do that
sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator

the current map deletes space for dlc, no way around it unless it is fixed

I suppose that is something they will notice and fix in the case they try to add a dlc there and not really something that anyone in a management position will allow to be worked on "just because" some people dislike it as it is right now

you have to keep in mind that stuff like that costs lots of money for ZOS to do
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
am aware, my thing above mentioned to "fully fix" it is expensive for zos.. worldbuilding, art, ui, other teams would have to colaborate to fix (not to mention api issues as you said)
it costs money for them to fix the error but sooner or later they will run out of space on the map, they will either have to fix it or they have no more room for dlc

it would be in their interests to do this sooner rather than later to avoid major refactor later if they want to fit in some dlc.

right now they cannot do eastern morrowind, skyrim's winterhold - popular nostalgia areas that cannot be put in eso right now because zones are in wrong place

sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
we know neither their grand plan nor how difficult it would be to make these fixes in the current system. maybe they will use up all the space they got and later replace everything with a new system that allows for an easy fix?
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]

i dont know how their current system works internally but it took me about a year to fix it in my addon

if they put a zone in a wrong place then it just makes more headache when they would have to go back and fix it

the fix isnt easy, worldbuilding teams would have to alter zone, art would have to alter map, ui would have to renormalise things

as time goes on it becomes more harder to fix that (they already have 8 years of tech debt because basegame was wrong)

"one tamriel" was the biggest base game overhaul they ever did, stressful for all i imagine, i wouldnt want to wish that on zos employees when they realise they are trapped and they have to fix several zones just to fit in some dlc
sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
yet you implore them to do exactly that for no real gain :P
I'm pretty sure they will find a way to fix it if there was a real need to fit in some dlc
asking them to do it before then based on some assumptions is just...
Thal-J
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]
if they know the issue now then they can prepare slowly rather than crunch when bossman says "lets go eastern morrowind" and then they realise huge mountain of problems
i just want zos to be aware since roleplay community have been shouting for 8 years this issue and no one has seen it.
sirinsidiator
@sirinsidiator
I'm pretty sure they have read these threads and are aware of the issue
just because there is no reaction doesn't mean they are not keeping track of something
someone in some team has this on the back of their mind and when the time comes they will do something about it
also zos doesn't crunch from what I heared in the past. they are pretty strict about work times
thal_j
@thal_j:matrix.org
[m]

rumour is next chapter is telvanni side of morrowind.

since vvardenfell dlc it has been wrongly shaped

if they use current shape for worldspace then they irreversably have zone in wrong shape and adds another zone to the pile to fix.

if they are aware of the issue you would expect them to fix in advance but no. i am just trying to raise awareness before problem becomes way too overbearing to fix

idk, i just want some feedback that they (worldbuilding & creative teams) know of the issue because there has been nothing for years and roleplay community keeps shouting into void.

i made the addon cos i am passionate about the game and as a hope someone at zos will see it and comment the mistake

Cairenn
@Cairenn
As others have said, pretty sure they are aware of the issue, and Dan has said that he'll mention it, there's not much more that can be done by a UI channel
