there is a "stop" which is the same as if there were "close"

stop is just unref .. the context has explicit close method but this seems unreferenced in wificlient class
yes you are right
unref does close
The semantic of "unref" does not hint closing .. anyway no need for explicit close after stop

"unref" is called any time you lose reference of the object
when that count hits 0, then the memory is freed and will no longer respond to packets
and "unref" is "hidden" from the API

help, getting error that WiFiClient not defined in a single function where I'm passing it in as a pointer. the function uses SPIFFS.open, WiFiClient works ok in all other functions just not in the one using SPIFFs?

Headers are in correct order: "FS.h", ESP8266WiFi.h, ESP8266WebServer.h

@RussMathis why do you pass WiFiClient as pointer?
@RussMathis did you call SPIFFS.begin
