For some reason I don’t see the install button in the board manager in the arduino ide 1.6.5 r3 I’ve seen it in the past. But I can’t seem to uninstall/reinstall the latest esp8266 code. Has anyone experienced this? Should I use a different version of the IDE?
oops, I mean r5

this is on a Mac btw. I’ve tried reinstalling it a few times. I even archived the /Library/arduino15 folder and let the IDE rebuild that. i’ve tried putting in the board manager url and restarting the IDE. i’ve tried emptying the trash, then reinstalling. i’m going to try and downgrade back to 1.6.4 next.

that's weird. when i pushed the update yesterday i checked that it installs fine with 1.6.5. i'm on a mac as well.

it’s been working for a while for me (months), but ive been having some restart issues on my device, so I figured I’d see if I had the latest version. But then found I couldn’t uninstall it. now it doesn’t even show up in the list.
my guess is that something isn’t fully uninstalling with the IDE itself.
I was renaming the /Library/Arduino15 folder to /Library/Arduino15OLD, then reinstalling the ide. it recreates that folder. but i think it still somehow has a link to the old folder. i just compressed the folder into a zip for a backup and now i’m deleting that OLD folder to see if that works.

dang it. that didn’t work either. i tried doing 1.6.5 r5 again. i can see the Adafruit esp8266 in the board managers list, but not the community version. I’m pointing the board manager url to the stable version, http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json

have you deleted the Arduino stuff in you user directory?
Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Arduino15\packages\esp8266\
Linux: /home/[username]/.arduino15/packages/esp8266/

has anyone tried the command line interface for the arduino ide? I’m wondering if there may be a log file or debugger somewhere that might explain why I can’t see the esp8266 in the board manager

hooya! I got it to work! That was a pain in the neck. Unfortunately I don’t know what i did to make it work. Lots of rebooting and reinstalling applications. What a relief

igrr have you had a situation where the ide is writing to the esp, it gets about 75% done, then it just stops? Is that a power issue?
