I am still having an issue with the esp functioning correctly for 2 days and then not going into deep sleep which then flattens the battery. I have just run it on the bench with usb power and sure enough, after 2 days of perfect operation, it suddenly stops going into deep sleep.
Any clues anyone?

The plot thickens. The test described above was powered by a solar usb power bank directly into the wemos. Now, if I powerthe wemos from that same power bank it refuses to go into deep sleep. I measure 4.7v at the 5v pin on the wemos while it is awake.
Now here's the mystery.
If I run the wemos from the laptop usb port, it runs perfectly, albeit short term. I again measure 4.7v at the 5v pin when the wemos is awake.
Anybody???

did you add a diod to the solar panel on the GND ?
GND or VCC

In the initial installation when the problem was first detected, yes.

the question may seem crazy but does the deepsleep problem occur when the leds are enabled ?

@tobozo Good question because I am not sure.

the "it refuses to go into deep sleep" problem
if it successfully goes to deepsleep when using the leds, you probably have some logic in the power bank to prevent overcharging, or to handle different charging modes
and this messes up with the ESP, probably triggers a reset after it goes in low power mode

@tobozo Ok, that sought of makes sense except that it ran perfectly for 2 days prior.
@tobozo But you may still be right.
The original installation ran a single cell lipo and battery shield and still ran perfectly for 2 days and then.....

how was the battery level after 2 days ? same as the first day ?

Yes, fluctuated between 4 and 4.3v with solar panel.
Sorry, 4-4.2v

maybe there's a security preventing the charge to last too long
if it's a power bank for iPhone, it may be optimized for short charges rather than long use

@tobozo failsafe timer? maybe.
@tobozo It's a cheap generic charger for anything on usb power.
Except wemos's
Right now it is being powered by one of those breadboard power supplies and so far is running ok.
Sadly I have to wait another 2 days to see if the bug persists.
