Zak Cole
@zscole
lol
is there a section for performance engineering?
Jared Wasinger
@jwasinger
no. not specifically (to my knowledge)
Zak Cole
@zscole
well shit
why not?
performance testing?
rather than engineering
Jared Wasinger
@jwasinger
on a specific client?
Zak Cole
@zscole
i'm just trying to do some general research right now, so anything, really.
Jared Wasinger
@jwasinger
can you be more specific about what you are looking to find?
Zak Cole
@zscole
i'm doing some research on the effects of WAN conditions on consensus algorithms, governance, anf just general protocols.
such as latency, packet loss, bandwidth, or other network impairments
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Hudson Jameson] @zscole try the ethereum/research gitter channel. There may be people in there who are interested in that.
Zak Cole
@zscole
@Souptacular seems kinda dead over there on the research channel
Tim Siwula
@timxor
More async style, deff not daily stand-ups in here
Zak Cole
@zscole
I'll check out that white paper though
Thanks
Hard to find architects
to talk to about this kind of stuff
Tim Siwula
@timxor
This repo has some recent benchmarks we were aggregating across platforms for the opcodes https://github.com/ethereum/benchmarking
Zak Cole
@zscole
oh awesome
Zak Cole
@zscole
what was benchmarked? EVM performance?
Tim Siwula
@timxor
Yea evm opcodes
You know those? 🤪
Zak Cole
@zscole
yeah
great whitepaper, thanks
high level overview though, is there anything more specific
ledgerwatch
@AlexeyAkhunov
@zscole You might want to check this out: http://hackingdistributed.com/2018/01/15/decentralization-bitcoin-ethereum/ It does not have all you want, but something
Tim Siwula
@timxor
What specific WAN research are ya working on? More context plz. Stats in this space are rather sparse, most of the time is spent building the systems, I think. Thought there is the wonderful eth stats dashboard https://ethstats.net/
Zak Cole
@zscole
@AlexeyAkhunov awesome thanks I’ll check it out
@tcsiwula how throughput, latency, bandwidth, and packet loss effect the performance of consensus algorithms and protocols within the Ethereum blockchain
Throughout does have an effect, from what I understand, but how are applications validated prior to deployment?
I’m a performance engineer
So I’d like to figure that stuff out
Jason Carver
@carver

affect the performance of consensus algorithms and protocols

@zscole Presumably you mean uncle rate, here. If not, then what?

Zak Cole
@zscole
That would be a part of it, yes
But also like in PoS, wouldn’t latency affect achieving correct consensus?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] though it's worth stressing that protocol scalability isn't really that consensus algo dependent
[Vitalik Buterin] but it's not like a 100 factor difference
Zak Cole
@zscole
Sure, but other protocols that do affect scalability are influenced by WAN conditions such as throughput, latency, and packet loss.
And transaction times
Zak Cole
@zscole
Wouldn’t PoS like CBC even, affect scalability as well if adverse network impairments inhibited achieving proper consensus?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] so the overhead of all these protocols is not that high relative to transaction load
[Vitalik Buterin] and actually PoW has the lowest overhead of all
[Vitalik Buterin] Casper FFG can survive higher latency than PoW
Zak Cole
@zscole
Isn’t FFG a hybrid consensus algorithm?
With PoS layered on top of PoW?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] yes
