What specific WAN research are ya working on? More context plz. Stats in this space are rather sparse, most of the time is spent building the systems, I think. Thought there is the wonderful eth stats dashboard https://ethstats.net/

@zscole
@AlexeyAkhunov awesome thanks I’ll check it out
@tcsiwula how throughput, latency, bandwidth, and packet loss effect the performance of consensus algorithms and protocols within the Ethereum blockchain
Throughout does have an effect, from what I understand, but how are applications validated prior to deployment?
I’m a performance engineer
So I’d like to figure that stuff out
Jason Carver
@carver
affect the performance of consensus algorithms and protocols
@zscole Presumably you mean uncle rate, here. If not, then what?
Zak Cole
@zscole
That would be a part of it, yes
But also like in PoS, wouldn’t latency affect achieving correct consensus?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] though it's worth stressing that protocol scalability isn't really that consensus algo dependent
[Vitalik Buterin] but it's not like a 100 factor difference
Zak Cole
@zscole
Sure, but other protocols that do affect scalability are influenced by WAN conditions such as throughput, latency, and packet loss.
And transaction times
Zak Cole
@zscole
Wouldn’t PoS like CBC even, affect scalability as well if adverse network impairments inhibited achieving proper consensus?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] so the overhead of all these protocols is not that high relative to transaction load
[Vitalik Buterin] and actually PoW has the lowest overhead of all
[Vitalik Buterin] Casper FFG can survive higher latency than PoW
Zak Cole
@zscole
Isn’t FFG a hybrid consensus algorithm?
With PoS layered on top of PoW?
Eth-Gitter-Bridge
@Eth-Gitter-Bridge
[Vitalik Buterin] yes
[Vitalik Buterin] both hybrid FFG and full FFG perform better than PoE
[Vitalik Buterin] both hybrid FFG and full FFG perform better than PoW
