@alexvandesande Do watch that video above. It makes me feel sick.
Alex Van de Sande
@alexvandesande
@bobsummerwill holy shit that is terrible! Never heard about it before and it’s quite shocking..
It’s step by step the way they sell timeshares, MLM and all kinds of shams.
Bob Summerwill
@bobsummerwill
Yes, and it is happening all over the world. They claim to be "the fastest growing business in the world". Hundreds and hundreds of local meetings. They are finding millions of victims who know little more about the technology than the words cryptocurrency and Bitcoin. It is a disaster. People are handing over thousands of dollars that they can ill afford to spare to these criminals.
Alex Van de Sande
@alexvandesande
It’s not new. I remember the first time I saw mentions of bitcoin in Brazil was some assholes selling a “mining” software that was nothing but a pyramid scheme. You’d download a clone of the client, get nothing by mining on the CPU of course, but get “points” for finding new people to buy the software. Then they would conflate the gains with their software with the bitcoin price rises...
It’s unfortunate that those people just take the “it makes money” part of our technology and sell it to people who don’t know better

@cityhunter441_twitter, @alexvandesande more on OneCoin:

Hello. Back to token tutorial, I have a question. At this moment anyone can send Ether to a token contract as if it's normal account. Would it be possible to create a restriction of the amount a person can send? If you take daohub.org as an example , you are able to send any amount of Ether then get equivalent amount of token back. I am wondering if you can write a token contract to validate minimum/maximum amount an account can send to the contract.
Luca Zeug
@luclu
@makoto just use a conditional statement like:
if (balanceOf[msg.sender] > maxValue) throw;
(following the variable declaration of https://ethereum.org/token here)
But depending on your usecase this might be pointless as one person can either split their transfers or user multiple accounts.

@luclu is transfer function the one used when sending money? Can it also take argument other than _to and _value?

@cityhunter441_twitter Oh wow, she managed to be a speaker at a conference organized by the Economist? That is quite an oversight on their behalf. From what I can see, OneCoin is just a classic MLM scheme, which generates all its "profits" by selling its members "educational material".

The difference between Ethereum and OneCoin is night and day.

See http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/who-wants-onecoin-millionaire-you-7346558 for another mainstream article on it.

What is the best way to query the blockchain from the server? I installed Geth but it keeps crashing..
Luca Zeug
@luclu
@Rincker as Ethereum uses a p2p network for communication and synchronization there is no server for the blockchain in a traditional way. You will need a client to participate and interact with the network. Geth is one client. It comes bundled with Ethereum-Wallet. Try to start from there: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases

@evotam
Hope someone can help me. I'm doing Fabian's simple-dapp-example. After setting up testnet and running the meteor application, I can query for the variables defined in the contract.js, but when I run web3.eth.getCode('0x89a0368e0021a72987a5fa547cb1d9b235194e2e'), I get 0x unlike what he gets in his video. So I conclude that the contract is not deployed onto the private chain, what am I missing here?
evotam
@evotam
NVM, I got it. The console didn't like the keyword "var" for var contractInstance = GuessNumber.new({from: web3.eth.accounts[0], gas: 200000, data: contractCode});

Hi, I am currently learning about Ethereum and am going through the "cryptocurrency tutorial" (https://www.ethereum.org/token). Now that I have reached the next step "Improving your token", I'm supposed to go back to the source code and adding improvements. But I cannot find the code for the deployed contract. Am I missing something fundamental here? Thanks for any assistance!
Daryll Strauss
@daryllstrauss
Hi @dskioldebrand I'm a noob myself but I've got a couple steps further. As far as I can tell you just use the source and start over. Once a contract is deployed it is fixed. The code for the advanced token is at the bottom of the page. My problem is that I deployed the advanced token code and it doesn't seem to be working and I'm not sure why. Let me know if you get it to work.

IS there an ethereum wallet similar to coinbase or openledger that is a SaaS? I dont understand why each system needs to run a node if they are not going to mine, I suppose mist runs a geth client. For transactions, isnt a SaaS wallet sufficient? Is there aything like that
dskioldebrand
@dskioldebrand
@daryllstrauss, thanks for replying. I did the same by just continuing the tutorial onward. I may be getting the same problem as you. When I deploy a contract of the advanced token I get a transaction confirmation, but with a red text displaying " No data is deployed on the contract address!".No token is created in my contract section of the wallet as the simple case. Is it the same for you?
Daryll Strauss
@daryllstrauss
@dskioldebrand Yes, that sounds like the same problem. Good to know it isn't just me. What's your wallet? I can send you my basic token just for fun.
dskioldebrand
@dskioldebrand
@daryllstrauss sure thing! But it will have to be tomorrow. I am out on the countryside and left my dev laptop at home. I'll post it later

@cityhunter441_twitter.
Google took me to BeyondMLM. I've never been there before searching for OneCoin information. Ignore that site if it's unreliable. Wikipedia unreliable in your mind? And Coindesk? There are no shortage of sites where you can find credible criticism.

If you want to believe that OneCoin are any kind of "business" then good luck to you. Open your eyes, and see how their principal people behave on stage and how little substance there is in their words.
