@niemyjski looks like moving to xproj is a massive change. Since even version numbers and build runner needs to change
Version numbers no longer come from assembly info. But from project
Project.json
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:33
really
wonder how people are versioning it then
what needs to change on the build runner?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:34
SLN runner changes to dotnet CLI
U can version by editing json
For each project
I believe some build systems like kore are able to help
But haven't tried it myself
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:37
let me look into that
looking right now
if you want to get the conversion done. I can work on all the build stuff
the main thing for me is can we run it locally for day to day dev
if we have to be merging for day to day dev all the time it’s no good. I’m fine with the build being broken for a few days while I fix it :)
if you want to get it to where it pulls down and builds everything. I can work on the rest of it.
That sound good?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:41
Sure
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:41
I really think we should wait until rc2 when things settle a bit more.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:42
i was actually thinking the same too
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:42
Were you talking about the revision auto incrementing?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:42
looks like they got rid of assembly info
^^
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:43
the project.json for dependencies is a pretty stable since its nuget3.0 not really asp.net5
or dotnet core
the rest is all potentially still in play for changes
in RC2
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:43
I have seen them making a lot of changes to their project.json files for rc2
Also the target framework monikers are all changing. Which we would use in the clients and Foundatio
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:44
its going to netstandard yes?
rather than the net461 etc we have now
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:45
Yeah, and there are other changes around that too.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:45
any idea when this blessed event is "RC2"
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:45
build
microsoft build 2016 registration
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:46
gotcha
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:46
I think the best plan is to wait for RC2 and then we tackle the Foundatio project as a smaller 1st step.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:46
so april
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:46
10 days 1 hour
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:46
i am ok with that
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:46
@ejsmith but it would be safe to port to the new project format and just target the 461
nothing would change
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:46
Yeah they are targeting build for sure
Yes, but you build that new format with the dotnet cli
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:47
i've got the dependencies script wired down, i can just pull ur current code, run the script and it all compiles
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:47
yes I know
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:47
Which is in chaos
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:47
with msbuild
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:47
I’m saying we do that when rc2 is released
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:47
we can start then
its just a couple of weeks
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:47
Awesome
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:47
it would be easier than foundatio it’s really just one website and some console apps
1.5 weeks :D
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:47
i'd also maybe start with the clients repo
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:47
@sharathsatish maybe we could have a virtual hackathon
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:47
Yeah, maybe so if we aren't targeting a new platform.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:47
:)
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:48
since there are fewer dependencies and stuff
lol i am game
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:48
I could broadcast on livecoding
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:48
24 hours of coding? 12 for me, 12 for you guys
:D
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:48
US and India timezomes
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:48
:)
would be cool
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:49
heh ya
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:49
Yeah that would be pretty cool. :-)
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:49
what time is it there?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:49
1920
IST
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:49
zulu?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:50
It's 9am here
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:50
CST?
or CDT or whatever it is this time of year
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:50
7:20pm there?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:50
yes
I’m kinda excited
:D
be so nice when the new tooling is out
lets pray it’s ready
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:51
Yeah kind of a waste when all that stuff changes
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:51
hell ya, no more having to install msbuild and vs everywhere
and worrying abt random developer packs
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:51
@frankebersoll and myself have both ran into issues with the new dotnet cli a month or two ago
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:51
Yes and 1 step closer to cross plat
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:52
true
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:52
yep
@sharathsatish what os do you normally run
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:52
We will get there!
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:52
Windows
i run ubuntu in VMs for docker tests
i don't really like OSX
too gimicky for my taste
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:53
Yes i really want to get to where you can run Exceptionless as a docker image!
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:53
also everything is controlled by apple
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:53
once we get all of our dependencies on core clr
would you mind helping us with: exceptionless/Exceptionless#64
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:53
I would not mind it a bit
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:53
That is a long ways off
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:53
yeah
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:53
once we get done with all these coreclr changes
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:53
1 step at a time
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:53
sometime in may perhaps
we can attempt that
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:54
I think it’s more till late summer
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:54
hopefully they are super close to RTM by them
then*
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:54
it will take a bit for people to update to core clr
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:54
I think we have a while before all our deps are core compatible
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:54
ah true
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:54
I have write acess to most of our dependencies
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:54
haha
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:54
so I can port some of them but not all of them
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:54
Plus there is no signalr for core yet
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:54
as long they are all oss
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:54
guess would be good to do pr for the ones I don’t have access too
yeah that is true
we all need to start +1ing the heck out of signalr :D
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:55
signalr is pretty isolated though right?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:55
I think we have plenty of priorities over working on other peoples repos.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:55
in the code i mean
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:55
Yes it's very isolated
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:55
thats probably the last thing that can go to core
since they havent even spoken about when they might write that in
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:56
there’s a lot of people using it
what makes me mad as hell
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:56
yeah it will be a little bit I think.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:56
is they ported wcf of all things before signalr
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:56
ya
guess the numbers for wcf are still higher
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:56
it should die
in a fire
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:56
They didn't port WCF. They only started porting the WCF clients.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:57
yes, same thing :)
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:57
though with WebAPI/MVC why bother
with anything WCF
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:57
anything wcf < signalr
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:57
No it's not. Not even close. Core apps will have to communicate to WCF. They needed that.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:57
do either of u know of a good OSS OAuth2 libs for c#
that can help me get a API for Auth running easily
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 13:58
yeah
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:58
And I'm sure it's a completely different team. The signalr team is the asp team. And they are really busy with getting 1.0 out.
it’s what we use for exceptionless
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 13:59
I think eventually we should migrate our app to the identity server lib and not roll out own.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 13:59
can i also implement a custom provider if we want ot manage auth ourselves?
in that lib
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:00
@ejsmith whys that
@sharathsatish yes, there are a ton of providers
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:01
because i am bound to run into cases where I might need to roll my own auth
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:01
Because it's a much more complete and I don't want to be responsible for maintaining things that should be part of the core libs
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:02
yeah
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:02
That lib is only for oauth clients. It's not useful for being an oauth server.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:02
gotcha
i have heard of Auth0 but not really run into anything else concrete to roll your own oauth2 server
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:03
Awesome!
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:04
We have some unique needs for auth but I think that lib is flexible enough to handle them.
We also need to migrate to that so that our API can fully support oauth 2. We only support 1 oauth flow right now.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:05
i am also waiting for the nancy port over to dotnet core to get done
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:06
Yeah, I saw someone is sponsoring that port.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:06
i mean i like webapi but nancy is much simpler in terms of design
yes been watching that thread to see when 2.0 will come out
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:06
Yeah
What about the servicestack stuff? I think that guy has a complete custom stack too.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:07
ya, looked at that as well
its quite interesting
lots of support libraries to handle most common needs
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:09
Yeah, I am just not real big on relying on some 3rd party to keep their stuff up to date and support their libs. Especially now since asp.net core is soo much simpler and componetized.
You think the new Mvc is still too complicated?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:10
well the thing is even with Nancy and MVC, you still need things like Newtonsoft.json, redis and rabbitmq clients
and all that jazz
the best of which are maintained by the guys from service stack
by best i mean the fastest
the new flow is pretty cool
very light
might switch to that but in my day job, have to support nancy hosted apis
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:11
What kind of apps are you working on?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:12
APIs that can support multiple channels (Web, App, Telephony etc)
basically its a marketplace so the usual ecomm flows, matching buyer and seller
etc
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:13
Cool sounds interesting.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:14
moving them off WebAPI2 and MVC4 and the a mishmash of business logic in controllers :(
if there is discipline any framework is fine, if not then its best to get one where it complains if u do stupid things like controllers calling the DB directly
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:16
Yeah, that's true. Nancy does that?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:17
it makes it really hard to do it, since the module structure they have highlights to developers when they shouldn't have such code
the endpoint handlers are wired in the constructor, ppl know they shouldn't be making db calls in the contructor :O
the things we have to do to encourage good coding practices
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:18
Interesting. I should check that out some more.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:18
its not that the framework throws an error, just makes it even more obvious what not to do
which is a start
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:19
Could make some Roslyn rules that enforce things like that and they can live right in the project so your team has to use them.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:19
i am hoping with roslyn out there, ppl will start creating code quality tools that can be hooked into ci pipelines
hahaha
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:19
:-)
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:19
we both went in the same direction at the same time
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:20
Heck yeah, great minds. ;-)
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:20
:D
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:21
What I want is awesome analyzers and refactorings like resharper has, with the resharper navigation features in vscode
Would be AMAZING
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:22
well u have beta of debugging out now :)
maybe hope for something this year
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:22
Didn't see that
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:23
Yeah, progress. :-)
Have you seen the chrome debugger for code?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:25
seen, not used
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:25
Can set breakpoints in code that get hit when running in chrome.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:25
:O
that sounds awesome
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:27
You guys think there is hope for .net to regain momentum in the dev community?
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:27
i think so
oracle has dropped the ball on java
many times now
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:27
I feel like MS is doing a lot of really good things.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:27
and c# imo is a really refined language
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:27
Yes agreed people want a Java alternative
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:27
given all the push on OSS, free IDEs
cross platform
etc
it might swing some votes
also have u seen the latest perf numbers on core?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:28
Everyone always agrees that C# is a good language. Just didn't like being tied to MS.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:28
1.15 million requests per sec on a single server
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:28
Yes, they are making great progress.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:28
u can't argue with them numbers :)
ppl who argue that c# doesn't perform i usually send them to that and akka.net now
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:29
There are just a ton of devs out there that immediately say heck no to anything associated to MS.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:29
well i think the image of MS = bad will persist for a few years still
but with Satya unleashing the hounds
i think MS has a promising future
and will help overtake oracle/java atleast
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:30
Yeah, agreed but it seems like they have a good chance of turning that perception around.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:30
exactly
i don't really buy all the MS is bad and evil malarky
esp from folks who then go develop iOS and android apps :D
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:30
Now if someone creates a Java to C# tool for coreclr and made it somewhat easy to migrate some Java projects. That would be pretty interesting.
Yep
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:31
lol well we have roslyn, but is the java compiler OSS?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:31
Nope don't think so.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:31
kind of limits the options then
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:31
I think it's open source but under a weird license
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:32
well as long as it has apis that let me read the entire code base in a structured form
its a good start
maybe jetbrains could be convinced to look into it :D
or MS themselves
they did kind of attempt it with those Android to Windows app convertor thing
may it RIP
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:33
There are already tools to do it, but they will need to be updated to coreclr
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:33
really!
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:33
Haha
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:33
there is a java to c# convertor that works?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:34
Sharpen at one point was pretty decent.
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:35
are you both at Build this year? @ejsmith @niemyjski
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 14:36
No, neither of us are going.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:44
:(
We usually go when there's good hardware
Maybe with enough trolling we could be a speaker lol
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:47
lol
i am waiting for the HoloLens units to be available outside the US
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:47
you buying one?
they are crazy expensive
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:48
me personally, no way
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:48
I had a friend buy two of them for his software company
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:48
i might convince my company to spring for a couple of them :D
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:48
I wanted to buy the rift but too rich for my blood :(
hehe
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:49
costs as much as most developers monthly salary :(
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:50
yeah
they are not cheap
dang
curl is 17 years old today
almost legal
with it being the first day of spring, what are you all up to
Sharath Satish
@sharathsatish
Mar 20 2016 14:52
it was a cool 98 degrees here today
i think spring went on a holiday
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 14:53
jesus
Sharath Satish

It gets over 100 a lot in the summer in Texas.
Sounds like you guys don't go over 100 a lot there. I was thinking it was hotter there.

I’m reworking the avatar dropdown

removed all the custom theme css for it
and went with native bootstrap stuff
took me the past 2 hours
but it looks nice
also removed like 60 lines of menu code that was never being rendered….
pushing now
thing I like is you now have some indication it’s a menu
to many people didn’t know you could click it
can you work on the mobile stuff? You’re a lot better at css than me
I’ll work on updating our auto-active directive to highlight the menu items when your on that page.. etc.. my account
Do you think we should hide the help search button when you are on mobile
it just takes up so much space
thinking maybe we want to split up the searchbar into two lines on mobile
if you have a really long project name.. you can’t even see the searchbar

think I found a bootstrap bug.. If you put hidden-xs on it
you don’t get rounded corners.. also it looks very goofy
idk

We are going to have to render something different for mobile.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 18:26
yeah
I agree
maybe two lines with date filter and hour filter on one and the search filter on the other
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 18:32
No hours.
We need to try and find some other time examples
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 18:39
I think we need to try and get project as 1 full width menu item that expands when you click it and same for time with the standard choices. No custom range support on mobile.
Then a filter box one.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Mar 20 2016 18:46
I meant project and time filter on one line
yeah
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Mar 20 2016 18:51
we really need to do a better job with the custom date selector.
But that can be another time.

should log a feature usage on all this stuff and even see how much it’s being used
