night
dang
kinda want to switch from bower just because of all the tooling is so much better
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 13:19
dang guess they just added bower support too
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 13:30
That's nice!
Yeah everyone seems to be converging on NPM even for browser stuff.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 13:47
yeah
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 14:19
I need to start using different browsers when I’m testing / deving
found an edge issue and a firefox css issue was reported the other day
be nice when we don’t have to worry about that anymore
the edge tools are really good

Apr 07 2016 15:39
npm-check is the new ncu?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:44
I guess
I think I still like ncu more
for quick updates
but npm-check gives you way more info
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:44
yes, and it has this fancy user interface
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 15:45
Fancy
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:45
which nobody called for.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 15:46
I like that it lets you see different levels
And pick and choose
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:48
and tells you about possibly unused packages
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:49
today I wrote a PowerShell script for updating nuget packages in your solution
we have a solution with nearly 100 projects and it takes forever to update our core nuget packages, which are used everywhere and have some dependencies themselves
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 15:50
With ES6 and tools that cleanup imports and do tree shaking and then be able to clean up your packages too
Awesome stuff
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:50
you open the nuget dialog, click update and then you go to lunch
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:50
yeah
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:50
and when you come back, maybe it worked.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:51
@frankebersoll project.json will fix that
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:51
enter the powershell script. it does it in 3 seconds.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 15:51
Nice
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:52
so you have 100 projects
microsoft better have some kind of tool to change to the new project format
cause it’s going to be a nightmare to migrate all these
Frank Ebersoll
@frankebersoll
Apr 07 2016 15:52
not yet, but probably soon.
yes, otherwise… new powershell script.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:53
@ejsmith I’m really close to finishing up the users stuff.. just gotta figure out how to the api call for this
Kinda regret putting all those helpers on the repos
lots of noise in there that I never want to look at
get by project get by org
just set the dang filter to project:id or organization:id and were done :)
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 15:54
Nah
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 15:55
I’m almost thinking that we gotta introduce a new controller action
/users
for stacks
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:03
so what are you thinking on the aggregations thing?
we need to put down a list of samples of how its used and figure out what syntax makes sense.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:04
well
stacks controller doesn’t expose searching by fields
and it probably shouldn’t as it’s crazy expensive and if you want that search by events
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:05
we need to merge our stuff in again and then switch over to the foundatio repos
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:05
yeah.. you can do that I’m already on it :)
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:05
what do you mean search by fields?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:06
aggregations
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:06
that’s not searching by fields
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:07
I call them field aggregations
fields
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:07
each repo / controller show know a list of things that are allowed to sorted on and another one that is allowed to be aggregated on.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:07
idk need to think of a way to simplify this.. worked on it last night and was on early this am and you were no where to be found
:(
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:07
yeah, I was doing the thing called sleeping.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:08
overrated :)
well right now we have a controller action for everything on stacks like /frequent /new
and overloads of those for by project be nice to simplify all these actions
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:09
maybe
so in our aggregations, we have the ability to do nested aggregations so you can get like a category count and then sub-category counts within that category.
and we need to add a new geomap aggregation as well
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:11
hmm
yeah
would be cool
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:11
it will be something like geogrid:somegeofield~12 where 12 is the size of the blocks
it gives you a list of buckets with counts
so you can show a heatmap
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:13
that’s pretty cool
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:14
yeah, its what we are working on right now.
after we add some of the stuff it will be a lot easier for us to add that to Exceptionless
which will be a nice graphical report
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:18
yeah
for sure
    [Route("~/" + API_PREFIX + "/projects/{projectId:objectid}/stacks/users")]
don’t love that route name
we might want to show all users of a specific stack someday
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:19
so this is to show the most users view?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:19
yeah
the others are /newest /frequent
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:20
are they stacks/newest ?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:20
no
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:21
so why would this be stacks/users?
for newest stacks
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:21
so why wouldn’t this be /users /project/{id}/users
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:21
the route is /stack/new /stack/frequent /stack/recent
I guess if we wanted to ever get a list of users on a stack we would name it /users/stack/id
no?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:22
no, that would be a sub-resource of a specific stack
like /stack/56bf3e38a7abbc17b4ef28bb/users
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:23
yeah
ok
so having stack/users returns a list of stacks sorted by user counts
stacks/users*
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:23
again, the other routes are /new /frequent
so why wouldn’t this be /users ?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:24
I’m saying it would be
prefixing it with /stacks/users for context
api/v2/stacks/users
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:24
I don’t get that.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:24
api/v2/stacks/frequent
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:24
your talking about 2 different things
1 is urls and 1 is api routes
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:25
kinda the same thing
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:25
no
not when we are having a conversation about what they should be
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:25
yeah
and I’m comparing them to what the others that already exist
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:26
all /users routes should follow the same pattern as /frequent
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:27
Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 11.26.52 AM.png
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:27
yes
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:28
that’s not confusing in the slightest?
as long as we agree
hehe
I can just see us wanting to get a list of users by stack some day and I’m trying to figure out what that route would be so we didn’t paint ourselfs in the corner
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:28
I guess we can consider calling it something like most-users
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:29
like I think it would be stacks/id/users
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:29
yes
kind of sucks because our other routes are just /frequent, but this one would be /most-users
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:29
yeah
I think users is fine
list stacks by users
and then list all users for a specifc stack by /id
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:30
yeah
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:30
lets go with this :)
will be done shortly :D
hard work is done
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:31
cool
man, Azure’s templates stuff seems to have blown right past AWS’s stuff
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:36
so much nicer.
Azure is really starting to get damn good.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:38
:)
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:38
playing with AWS has really made me appreciate Azure a lot more. Azure was REALLY bad at the beginning, but since Guthrie has taken over they have slowly taken the suck out.
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 16:39
AWS UI is so last decade. I love the Azure dash.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:40
it has gotten a LOT better
it was pretty bad at the beginning.
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 16:40
Yeah the old site was mediocre and the new Azure portal was slow/buggy at first but it definitely has improved.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:40
yep
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:43
improved at the expense of lost dashboards
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 16:43
True, I log in periodically to find blank squares. :)
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:43
not just us every developer I’ve talked to so far has lost there dashboards at least once
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 16:43
And I did have to completely recreate it once.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 16:47
now that they allow you to save and share
I would think that it would be hard to lose them now.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:47
hahaha
unREAL
just found a bug with elastic search (engine) I think
dammit
you can have terms with periods in the name
but you can’t sort by a term that has a period in the name
Matt Oswald
@moswald
Apr 07 2016 16:52
I finished that PR for #25 and #36 - let me know what you think. I'm headed out to lunch.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 16:54
ok will do :) thanks
@ejsmith we need to be able to specify a billing address and email address for an organization.. get emails every now and then asking for invoices because they get emailed to the wrong person or the accounting dept doesn’t have an exceptionless account
@moswald I’d rather break people and keep it clean and up the minor / major
@ejsmith want to take a look at his changes https://github.com/exceptionless/Foundatio/pull/37/files
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 17:05
elastic/elasticsearch#17600
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 17:16
dang I started consulting here 8 years ago today
linked in has been blowing up
this october will be fulltime for 8 years :)
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 17:52
jesus… Niemyjskified for 8 years...
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 19:14
someone needs to fix npm taking so dang long to install
our build takes 10 minutes
because a cdn takes 8 minutes to download a 5mb package for phantomjs
I’ve tried 2 different sources (bitbucket and cdnjs) and both take the same time
kinda want to open an issue with npm
should never ever take that long. should be a timeout
btw, fixed our builds failing on pull requests :D
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 19:24
I think it doesn’t even download from npm
is there any alternative to using phantom?
Matt Oswald
@moswald
Apr 07 2016 19:29
@niemyjski I've got no problem bumping the rev number, either :)
drop any comments on the PR, I can add to it if you want
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 19:32
dang they added right-click menu support on the azure dashboard.
that is super nice
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 19:34
One thing i never figured out is how to get my freaking profile image on the upper right to not be default shadow guy.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 19:34
hmm… mine is a pic
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 19:35
There's no Edit Profile link or anything.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 19:35
hmm
I lied
mine is generoc
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 19:36
I have one set on my MSDN account so it's not pulling from there.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 19:40
they need to merge in the account and billing stuff into the portal
get rid of the other crappy side
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:07
@ejsmith can you look at his foundatio pr
I think there may need to be some discussion about initialization not sure if the constructors need to change any
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:10
I can’t look now.
will try and look tonight.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:38
@BillHenning
can you take a look at dev app
and let me know what you think :)
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:38
About what?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:38
lets just say I fixed a bunch of stats docs
stats queries*
and the most users views should be live
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:38
URL?
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:40
This is odd... why would Session Start only affect 80% of users?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:40
cause not all users have sessions
for what ever reason
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:40
I start a session on every app instantiation.
So that feels buggy to me. Seems like all users (100%) should have session start.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:41
it could just be the time period you are looking at
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:41
Last 30 days
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:41
session events could be outside of the scope of the query
yeah
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:42
Ok... still feels weird as an end user. If i switch to any time period less than 30 days, I get no results.
Is this data old?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:42
ours is 84.4% too
yes
data is quite old
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:42
that does seem really weird
can you update the data
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:43
yes but that will take over an hour
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:43
I want to see if its the same on recent data.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:43
I’ll kick it off before I leave for the day and after you guys can look at it
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:43
Holy crap, it's saying 32% of my users get FileNotFoundExceptions.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:43
yeah
fix your shit
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:43
@BillHenning paying off already! :-)
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:43
That only happens when people try to open a file that isn't there any more.
Not my bug, but I can't believe that it's that high.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:44
do you notice if that dev site is faster than normal?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:44
I did all time and it shows 96% of users for session start
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:44
usually that site is super slow and it does seem faster
yeah
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:44
Does seem quicker.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:44
@niemyjski users on stack should show a percentage as well
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:44
I’m looking at this months snapshot locally and 99.8 of your users have sessions
@ejsmith talked about this
we’ll have to add an extra request to the page just to get that number
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:45
don’t care
its very useful information
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:45
lol
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:45
your problem to figure out how
Can you see that page when I send links like that?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:46
so you want another stat box for percentage
yes
so do you want to see a percentage in that box
or what
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:46
no, in the users box
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:46
yes
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:46
why would it be a different box?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:46
you want a percentage with hover
I’m ASKING
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:47
The list at the bottom is sort of useless. Would be nice to show some session info or something there. But maybe you can't since it's generic.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:47
yeah
it is kind of usless unless you want to click on different messages or it’s stacked on something specific
like a javascript error code
I’ll update that users box
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:48
Could show user in that and I think it still makes sense in all use cases.
Page: Blah User: ejsmith
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:48
eh
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:48
The feature, the user and the date
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:49
If I'm stacking on "Page: Blah" then why even show "Page: Blah" in the list at all?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:49
I’d rather build out all lists to have country flag (geo) and other htings
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:49
that is a good set of information to show everywhere
User is way more important that geo
why would you not want to show user?
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:49
how would you show it?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:49
Add it and then ask bill to tell you how to make it look nice. :-)
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:50
bill do a mockup and I’ll make that change :D
There's a case where the Summary in the list doesn't match the stack info above.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:51
Dude, Page: Blah (eric@codesmithtools.com)
done
have the user grayed out a little
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:51
yeah
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:51
don’t need a mockup for that
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:51
I imagine you can stack by other things too via API where you end up with different Summary text in the list items?
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:52
yes, you can put whatever you want there
but user is always relevant.
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:52
On the Sessions report, you have stuff like: username (identity)
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:53
yeah, copy that
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:53
But that can get long.
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:53
copy that exactly
Bill Henning
@BillHenning
Apr 07 2016 20:53
I think the name is the more important part of that and is what I'd like to see if you only show one of those.
Adding the GUIDy identity is going to clog up those other lists
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:54
yes, but having them show anything other than the same repeated value is good.
and both parts of that are relevant.
display name and identity
especially when idenity is email
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:55
Think I’m going to create a ViewStack model with TotalUsers
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:55
when you see any sort of event, I think at the top level you want to see who did it.
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:55
And Users so you can get that stat for cheap
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:55
cool
this users stuff is awesome @niemyjski
you are adding a lot of value
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:56
yeah
:)
been fixing bugs left and right too
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 20:56
good job
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 20:56
bootstrap update broke tab navigation and I fixed that too and lots of routing issues

we have a firefox bug might need the css guru to take a stab
tried to fix it for 20 minutes
something wierd going on in firefox only with li > a > span style=float:right
with the menu hover it goes down a level instead of floating to the left of the content area
weird
for the settings hover on the project dropdown

I think we either need a user column or we need to add user to all of them.
I think a user column would be nice.
guess the problem with a user column is that a lot of events don’t have users

that and extra space being taken up
you don’t know the size of the identity or name
could be really huge
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 21:03
well we can do display name with a hover tooltip for identity
and if they only have identity then just show that
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 21:03
yeah with a little user icon before the display name
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 21:03
yeah, but like I said, we have a ton of events without user
so it will probably look like crap for that
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 21:06
yeah
I’ll play around with it
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 21:06
we should probably do that for the (user) stuff
so Feature: Blah (user display)
and then a hover to show the identity
to take up less space.

the thing I don’t like about our stuff is it’s not really mobile friendly
like the abbr content isn’t clickable or hoverable on mobile or small layouts
Eric J. Smith
@ejsmith
Apr 07 2016 21:07
yeah, so you have to create rules to show it in a mobile friendly way
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 21:07
and when we clip messages
there’s no way to get the full message content

viewing on mobile isn’t going to be the same experience as desktop
its a condensed version
Blake Niemyjski
@niemyjski
Apr 07 2016 21:08
yeah
btw, we’ve been growing by +2million events per month
instead of 800k
@ejsmith I noticed a few orgs completely went over there limit for the month
what can we do for them?

I think we just need to keep on working on adding business value features and we will grow revenue.

like looking at there history they’ve had the same errors being thrown a crap ton of times and they haven’t done anything to fix them
:(
yeah

feel so much better now that the ui build deployment issue is fixed (where the build was failing on pr’s)
