Tell us what you have done, and what the full error is.

@NobbZ
What version of MacOS do you use? Have you updated your local package repository before running the command? @NeilShah2026
I'm not using Mac nor brew myself, though beeing on the wrong OS version or not having downloaded most recent copy of the package index are the most common problems in this situation.

Sorry for this silly question, but I dont where to begin. I think I have installed pytest but not sure how to check, pn the mac it keeps errors apparing?
Is there a way to paste work into exercism
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Not currently. Currently you can only submit through the CLI and work locally.
If you had says a bit more about what errors you have, we could have probably tell you how to solve them, but without having any infor thats hard

tried to download an exercism exercise, throwing command not recognized error:

zsh: command not found: exercism

any recommendations for troubleshooting for setting this up properly?
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Hi @yugalrajjain_twitter! I'm sorry you are having trouble. Can you please elaborate what OS you are on and how you installed exercism?

@kotp
@subinvelleringatt please read the conversation before your message to see if the steps there help you out, as it appears you are also on Windows. The message indicates that it is not finding exercism in the $PATH. Please show the exact message given though, as some error messages may appear similar, and it helps to be precise in what is happening, rather than making assumptions on either side (especially when we may be more aware of what exercism will give, and you may be more familiar with your operating system) to give us a fighting chance to get it right in fewer steps.

i had a failed install process:
15MBP2 exercism % brew install exercism
Error: homebrew-core is a shallow clone. homebrew-cask is a shallow clone.
To 'brew update', first run:
git -C /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-core fetch --unshallow
git -C /usr/local/Homebrew/Library/Taps/homebrew/homebrew-cask fetch --unshallow
These commands may take a few minutes to run due to the large size of the repositories.
This restriction has been made on GitHub's request because updating shallow
clones is an extremely expensive operation due to the tree layout and traffic of
Homebrew/homebrew-core and Homebrew/homebrew-cask. We don't do this for you
automatically to avoid repeatedly performing an expensive unshallow operation in
CI systems (which should instead be fixed to not use shallow clones). Sorry for
the inconvenience!

any ideas as to what is going wrong?

Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
I do not use mac or brew, but have you tried the suggestions from the message you pasted?
ynfle
@ynfle
@aleith is it an old version of brew?
Pradeep CE
@pradeepcep

Following the instructions given in the output of the command works. Had this earlier, and that solved it. I don't think it's specific to exercism, but rather to do with how packages are fetched from Github.

... This restriction has been made on GitHub's request because updating shallow

Yup
So is everything good now?

please i tried exercism configuration in my command prompt and I got this message Error: Get https://api.exercism.io/v1/validate_token: dial tcp 52.19.49.24:443: i/o timeout. I tried it again and I got this Get https://api.exercism.io/v1/ping: dial tcp: lookup api.exercism.io: no such host. I am not sure what is going on
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
This seems to be a networking issue. Either a (personal) firewall is blocking networking/internet for exercism or alternatively you need to configure a proxy. If its neither it might as well be temporary. This are the three most common issues for that problem.
ajmanuel047
@ajmanuel047

Hi, i have been trying exercism configuration in my command prompt and I got this message: Error: The base API URL 'https://api.exercism.io/v1' cannot be reached.

Get https://api.exercism.io/v1/ping: read tcp 192.168.1.101:7280->34.242.27.96:4

Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Are you perhaps behind a firewall or proxy that blocks access?
David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
@David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
thanks, I have disabled the windows firewall but the problem is still there
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Is the windows firewall the only netelement that might block things? When you do a ping api.exercism.io, does that work?
David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
@David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
I get this message:
Timeout for this request
100% lost packages
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Then there is either something blocking in your network, or your ISPs network, or a more global issue
David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
@David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
Thanks!
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Okay, can't ping myself, but reach the API, perhaps they are not responding to ICMP echo requests
David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
@David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
Is this API available if i´m trying from Cuba?
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Does Cuba have any known network restrictions to european internet services?
I'm not aware of any server side blocking of countries, though still countries might block services for many reasons. A well known example is China
David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
@David-Almaguer-La-Rosa
OK, I really appreciate your help, i will try later

what solution
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
What is the problem? What operating system are you using, what is the error you get, and what is the command you use? When your command includes the token, please only post the first and last 3 digits of it.

Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
I am not used to how homebrew works, though for many package managers you need to update the package database prior to beeing able to install things. Does brew have something like that?
From the docs I'd say update is what you need. https://docs.brew.sh/Manpage#update-options

Can you please share the UUID of your solution, if you are not sure how to find it just tell the full URL of your solution. I will forward your request internally.

Hi, I'm trying to install the exercism CLI in a Mac with homebrew, but after the 'sudo exercism configure' completed correctly, when i try to download something the CLI continue to prompt me that i need to configure the tool. I'm confused.
