Where do you see they had files in ~/bin/exercism/exercism/?
Victor Goff
@kotp
In their terminal, at around 4:45 this morning, on their system when they were going through the instructions.
It was OSX judging from their window decorations, and their folder structure.
And the problem was the had extracted the archive into ~/bin. They are also very Graphical oriented, so I am sure their graphical tools are doing mystical things for them, so they aren't understanding what and where things are going.
So we moved the exercism folder and extracted just the exercism executablefrom the archive to the~/bin/` folder.

Sorry which user are you talking about? I don't see any messages from Aya regarding exercism/exercism existing
Victor Goff
@kotp
I don't know who Aya is, but it was someone almost 12 hours ago, similar problem.
ynfle
@ynfle
Unless this was done in direct message
Oh ok
Sorry
Aya is the most recent person to ask for support
Victor Goff
@kotp
Missing comma changes the message... I editted what I wrote.
Congrats Aya! Did they get sorted?
ynfle
@ynfle
No. No reply from the user yet
Victor Goff
@kotp
It did not fix it, last I heard. Looks like they have a system installed brew, rather than user based install.
So doing things like sudo brew install rather than the intended brew install.
ynfle
@ynfle
Right. But before that, they were trying to install it manually

@ynfle
@kotp, I filed an issue/bug report exercism/interactive-cli-walkthrough#96
Victor Goff
@kotp
Thanks. I might have time to work on that after dinner. Will save us some time here on Gitter.
Then we can help out with the hard stuff instead. Because then this should be easy, with the right instructions.

@kotp
@smhuprikar How are you doing the install?
What have you done, what isn't working?

Hi there! I was trying to complete my first Exercism Go exercise, however I am being faced with a "package hello_world is not in GOROOT (/snap/go/6745/src/hello_world)" when trying to go run the main file. Any idea?
Ivo Pereira
@IvoPereira
I mean, I get that the project downloaded from Exercism is not in the GOROOT. However it was Exercism who download it to another folder. Should I move it to a GOPATH, write my script execution, test everything back and then upload from the "new path under GOROOT"?
Ivo Pereira
@IvoPereira
Hmm, from what I undestood I am not supposed to run the code directly but only to run the tests? Is that right?
Victor Goff
@kotp
Yes, @IvoPereira it is expected to run the tests, the exercise file is a library that you write, in essence. (Though nothing stops you from also running the code directly, it is your code.)
I can't answer all the GO questions, but I can answer that you should not move itto GOPATH, but let the files go where they went, as it was directed from the configuration. It is where it is intended to be.
There should be instruction in the README.md file that gets you started.
Yes @Abirouk that is one of the "different accounts" and is probably one of the most common. Did you get things sorted?
Ivo Pereira
@IvoPereira

Thanks @kotp. Yeah, only running the tests it works wonders, but I am not being able to "go run" the file as it shouts "go run: cannot run non-main package".

I can blindly follow the tests sure, but it would be nice to be able to test the application literally.

I haven't messed with any of the GO paths at all just to be clear.
Victor Goff
@kotp
Why are you writing an application? The tests should be written in the idea of "loading a library". If you want to write an application that uses your library, then that is a different thing.
And it is not impossible, and since you are here to learn Go, it is a worthwhile endeaver to research how to make the language work for you.
(not here on Gitter, but I mean on Exercism)
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@IvoPereira The go exercises are made in a way that they neither need to rely on the GOPATH nor on the new module system, but in a way that make them self contained.
Also they are meant as "libraries". They do not have any "runnable" component, nor are they planned to have one.

No. In general it's not good to do sudo when using brew. It will cause issues like this as well as others

I have a problem. I downloaded Exercism, launched it and this program has closing. What I need to do?
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
How do you "launch" it?
vorobej-ggvp
@vorobej-ggvp
There is a file exercism exe in the folder
ynfle
@ynfle
You have to run it from cmd.exe
Did you use the installer?
