This is actually pretty much the normal workflow.
Hopefully you will want to change the solution most of the time after having submitted the initial one. Very few of us post perfect first submissions.

Good day.

I've just started using exercism and after setting it up and writing the hello world code in PHP, the unit test wouldn't open test file for some reason or submit the file as per instructions given on the page. Is it that I'm doing something wrong? :S

Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
What do you mean by "test won't open test file"? Is there any error message you see?
@wwwzxc :point_up_2:
wwwzxc
@wwwzxc
Cannot open file "hello-world/hello-world-test.php".
that would be the error message
when I try to run this -> ./phpunit.phar hello-world/hello-world_test.php
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
What is the command that causes that error and what is your working directory when you call that command?
wwwzxc
@wwwzxc
the working directory is hello-world folder where the hello-world.php is located, same as test file
although Im very new to coding, so I might not understand correctly what you are asking ;x
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
So if you are already in hello-world folder, why telling phpunit.phar to run a level deeper when that file should be at the same level? ./phpunit.phar hello-world_test.php
wwwzxc
@wwwzxc
genius man :D
I kinda copy-pasted the line from instructions and didn't think about it
now it works!
could you also explain how to upload the solution properly? as if I copy this line : exercism submit /path/to/file [/path/to/file2 ...]
Im not sure what I actually suppose to write in the command
not good with these paths yet
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
exercism submit <filename>
whereas the filename has to be relative to where you are…
Understanding how pathes work is important…

@wwwzxc
finally it worked! Thanks for your help!

Hope you can help: I typed in "exercism configure --token=..." into my command window (right after: C:\Users\user>) and I got "'exercism' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." as the error message. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Have you correctly installed exercism? And which way did you follow? Manual or automatic installer?
@Buddha547 :point_up_2:
Mariya
@pkmariya
Hi, have issues in configuring newly installed exercism

when I run, "exercism configure --token=acb453f1-44bc-4aee-8ea6-54d569ff64c4" getting an error that "Error: The base API URL 'https://api.exercism.io/v1' cannot be reached.

Get https://api.exercism.io/v1/ping: dial tcp: lookup api.exercism.io: no such host"

Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@pkmariya please visit https://exercism.io/my/settings and reset your token there, please make sure it never leaks again, its like a password.
Now your actual problem, it seems your DNS can't resolve api.exercism.io, are you probably behind a proxy?
Mariya
@pkmariya
Thanks Norbert. I have reset my token. thanks for pointing out.
Yes @NobbZ , I'm trying this from office and probably that's the reason. my office firewall might have restricted it.

Good day ... when I submit a solution in Independent mode tracks even if my solution was wrong I will see " Well done on solving this exercise!" ... is any way to check my solution in Independent mode?
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@fazizkhani you run the tests locally.
There is currently no server side check.
Some tracks are working on supporting server side checks and AFAIR the feature is planned to enter beta during October.
fatemeh azizkhani
@fazizkhani
then I must use mentored mode for checking my solutions?
@NobbZ Thank you
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
No, you need to run the tests locally
Even in mentored mode there are no server side checks
fatemeh azizkhani
@fazizkhani
@NobbZ Thanks again for your help

Hi! "Segmentation fault (core dumped) " after run bin/exercism. Why doesn't running?
I use ArchLinux
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@daniilsolovey thats a common error when you have downloaded for the wrong architecture
You can do file ~/bin/exercism and check the output if the binary has been built for linux and your CPUs architecture
The output should not contain anything refering to BSD…

Hey guys,

Not particularly a support question, but hopefully someone can drop some suggestions.

I've recently started learning PHP and was wondering if you could suggest some simple beginner projects to actually build something. Preferably no CMS involved and pure vanilla PHP. I find it difficult to find ideas on the web that don't in anyway involve wordpress or jquery or similar stuff.

Would appreciate some guidance :) Thanks

@NobbZ
Thats a tough question, and I struggle with finding an answer in about any language I pick up, so I usually just try to rewrite some small scripts I have from the early days using the new programming language. Or some tool thats already part of my system. Basic functionality of find or du are those I tend to re-implement quite often as a learning experience.
