Hi! "Segmentation fault (core dumped) " after run bin/exercism. Why doesn't running?
I use ArchLinux
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@daniilsolovey thats a common error when you have downloaded for the wrong architecture
You can do file ~/bin/exercism and check the output if the binary has been built for linux and your CPUs architecture
The output should not contain anything refering to BSD…

Hey guys,

Not particularly a support question, but hopefully someone can drop some suggestions.

I've recently started learning PHP and was wondering if you could suggest some simple beginner projects to actually build something. Preferably no CMS involved and pure vanilla PHP. I find it difficult to find ideas on the web that don't in anyway involve wordpress or jquery or similar stuff.

Would appreciate some guidance :) Thanks

Thats a tough question, and I struggle with finding an answer in about any language I pick up, so I usually just try to rewrite some small scripts I have from the early days using the new programming language. Or some tool thats already part of my system. Basic functionality of find or du are those I tend to re-implement quite often as a learning experience.
wwwzxc
@wwwzxc
Well that would make sense, but this IS my first language and I don't have much to rewrite :D The problem I noticed with myself is that I kinda went through basics and additionally through OOP concepts and now while I kinda understand the different elements I have no idea how to practice gluing them together or at what time what to use if that makes any sense.
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Yeah, then as I said, try the easier functionality of du or find or other utilities you use on a close to daily basis.

Hey guys, I can't move the exercism folder into the bin. Can anyone help?
Victor Goff
@kotp
You shouldn't move an exercism folder to ~/bin only the executable file exercism.

hey guys i need help installing exercism for linux. I am using linux on dex so my architecture is aarch64. is there a way to install exercism still?
Victor Goff
@kotp
Unsure, but you may be able to compile from source. See the releases page: https://github.com/exercism/cli/releases
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@loser9190_gitlab if you can install the golang compiler on your computer, it is very likely (but not guaranteed) that you'll be able to manually compile the exercism tool for your computer. But it might take quite a while… Also please remember to check whether or not your prefered languages runtime/compilers is available for your system before going through the hassle of compiling the exercism tool manually.
Though GOARCH=aarch64 os not a valid option for crosscompiling, so either the Go-Crosscompiler gave your architecture a different name or you are out of luck.
A bit of googling around though seems to suggest that aarch64 might be what Go considers arm-v8

I am trying to set up exercism cli but when I type exercism configure into cmd it asks for a token. I believe that I have found and copied this but I don't know how to add the token to the command

@AndyTRichardson
Got it!

Hello everyone! I am not sure what my problem is, but I could not install exercism in any way in my machine (mac 64bit)
I tried through brew (but had an error installing brew) and I have tried doing it manually, but it still says command not found when I try running it. I am not sure what to try here. If anyone can help me, I'd be super happy ^_^
Victor Goff
@kotp
@lcastroemello what directions are you following for your installation? The Interactive CLI walkthrough may be helpful here. https://exercism.io/cli-walkthrough
Livia de Castro e Mello
@lcastroemello
Hello Victor! Thank you so much, I found out I was skipping a step on the manual installation here and it worked. Thank you for the walkthrough
Victor Goff
@kotp
Glad to hear that it worked for you. That walkthrough link is availble at the bottom of the exercism web page, if you ever need it again.

hi, i'm brand new to all of this and am trying to download and use exercism on linux. I've downloaded and extracted the files but when am attempting to move them into ~/bin, I get "exercism: no such file or directory"
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
@m73382846 are you in the correct location where you have extracted the tarball to?
m73382846
@m73382846
I'm honestly not sure
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Then make that sure
m73382846
@m73382846
I've extracted to the downloads folder as well as extracting to folders on hard drive. i'll run the find command for exercism and it won't find it; running locate command shows that it's showing up in the downloads folder.
i've followed the CLI walkthrough and keep getting stuck at moving the exectuable
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
locate is using an index which might be out of date, find scans actual drive content. So if you can't find the unpacked binary anymore, then you'll probably need to redownload
m73382846
@m73382846
have tried redownloading :(
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
And then you have unpacked? How?
m73382846
@m73382846
i've been following the instructions in the cli walkthrough step by step; have tried both right clicking on the download and selecting "extract here" as well as running the cmd line prompt
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
What happens then? What do you observe to be changed on your disk?
m73382846
@m73382846
there's a new file created in the downloads folder called exercism-linux-64bit, that's the only change
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Then please run file exercism-linux-64bit from the download folder. I doubt its a file though, but a folder containing the exercism binary and some shell completion scripts.
Or it is actually exercism-linux-64bit.tar because you only extracted from the gzip layer…
m73382846
@m73382846
just got it to work.lol. thank you
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Happy to hear that! Have fun solving exercises!
pero
@peropeanut_twitter
When trying to configure my exercism with my token i get a timeout...Im assuming its because im behind our office-proxy
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Then make sure you have configured your proxy correctly using HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables.
pero
@peropeanut_twitter
Ive tried doing that, still the same (Windows 10 )
Alright, it seems i had to do it in the specific cmd line window, worked now..Thank you
Norbert Melzer
@NobbZ
Well, of course you have. This is how environment variables work, they'll never affect siblings only children processes and itself.
Usually you should set them system wide.
