@theflametrooper i would prefer for the team to be able to agree on their stack
Man, i would really love to join a project but i ain't got time :ccc
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:33
@jj199611 It's hard for people cause they don't know what's happening :expressionless: Do you think we should specify stack?
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:34
No I meant that the teams can agree on their own stack by themselves entirely
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:34
Yeh, how do you think that would work?
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:35
Well all you guys provide is the project description but eventually the project is limited only by the teams imagination right?
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:35
Yep
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:36
Alright, so the teams could make a plan for how they are going to do the project (are they allowed to use something like google docs or some other place where they can take notes together in real time?) and make 2 or 3 versions of that plan, each plan with a different approach
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:37
Problem is, we need a project manager to manage all this
But cause we only launched we don't have those
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:37
Yes i got that, but people can sign up for that right?
Yeh
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:38
If the people that sign up for project manager I think they should be able to organise some stuff
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:38
Yeh. The project manager really needs to be the first person in the project
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:39
That probably gives the team a head start, yes
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:52
Well, IF i end up leading a project (which i would love to do) I really want a way to communicate with my team through voice, not just chat
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:56
I think we'll leave that to a team to team basis, there's always skype
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:56
True, while i would much rather use something like Discord
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:56
Well I can set that up
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:57
Will you set that up for each and every team?
because that will take alot of management
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:57
No we'll give teams an option probably
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:57
I don't know how much staff you guys have?
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:57
@/all @jj199611 Is there anything else that we could do to make signing up for a team easier?
@jj199611 We have 4 team members currently, but we bring on more really quickly if we have to

@StiviBaci
May 21 2016 09:58
hello
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 09:58
actually i think you shouldn't do anything more for the signup process, right now its really straightforward i think, just click a link and you're pretty much in
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 09:58
@StiviBaci Welcome :tada:
@jj199611 It's just cause people are not sure in terms of how they work, what language etc.

Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 10:02
@jj199611 I'm kinda having to go into every project to organize people. How do you think we will get project managers?
@StiviBaci Yeh defiantly and you can say you worked in a team etc. We however, cannot provide hosting for the project but you can always link back to the source code on github
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 10:04
Whose account will the repo be hosted on?
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 10:04
@jj199611 Everything is hosted on https://github.com/emteams and we use github teams for the project managers to manage a repo etc
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 10:06
I would say post this stuff in communities where there are a lot of project managers with development background
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 10:06
Do you know any specific ones?
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 10:07

I have just added the ViewTouch graphical touchscreen point of sale project to gitter. ViewTouch is an X Window Manager which allows software to be built top down, creating the GUI first, then adding functionality to the buttons. Its strength is that it emphasizes the benefits of remote display/input sessions over ssh. This version of the software is over 20 years old and the first version of it is 30 years old, and there is a 40 year heritage behind it. Every point of sale application in the world is inspired by and is derived from the ideas in ViewTouch.

May 21 2016 18:00
@GeneMosher then what are you doing here, if I may ask?
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:01
I have been at this for 40 years and have put more than a million dollars into this code. It deserves to live on. It is available at github. You can see for yourself. If anyone wants to benefit from it, they may, and I will help them. If they don't, then that's OK.

I'm here to share my work. I work on things at the level of graphics. I saw an opportunity to create a project so I did.
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 18:03
I think that Gene is proposing that he's sharing his work on the ViewTouch system and that he thinks it'd be neat if we picked that up as a project. potentially making a more modern version of it; as he says the current one is more than 20 years old.
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:03
Not being a programmer, except graphically, I can't work on code. But I can make my code available for others to either work on or to use.
If you've never heard of me then I'm not surprised. But I have a bit of history. There was a time, in 1985-86, when I was the only person who had created and made available to the public, software which made use of a touchscreen.

@GeneMosher I meant no disrespect by the way. I used to work in food services and I'm sure you played some part in the Positouch interfaces that are so common.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 18:08
you are one of the dozen of people who actually knwo whats is in x windows?
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:08
This software deserves to not die, to live on beyond me. I don't expect to be leaving the planet anytime soon, but this software and the thousands of people I have showed it to over the past 30 years, had a lot to do with the way people use computers today.
If you give this program your IP it will throw a display/input session to you across the local network and across the Internet itself, and because it doesn't use a mouse, it's very fast. The GUI is built out of X primitives. There's even an X server for Android that lets you do this from any Android device, and soon, from any Chrome OS device.
A picture of what I just described is on the viewtouch.com home page.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 18:11
There is also an x server for ios i have used for remote x sessiosns with qt and gdk.
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:11
I owned several restaurants in the 70's & 80's. I needed something to replace my cash registers. I created software which let my Apple II computers replace them. That was the beginning of the point of sale industry.
Any X server works if you want a remote display. Apple, Xming, anything.
QT and GDK were not designed for remote display. It is X doing the work. But ViewTouch was a GUI designed from X primitives, for remote display from the ground up. You can have literally hundreds of users on a single instance of the program and the database.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 18:13
@GeneMosher I think it is neat that you are willing to share this code. But this room is more aimed at people jsut learning to program and with a focus on web technologies.
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:14
Positouch was one of the first companies that copied me, yes.
If anyone wants to learn to program, then one of the best ways to do it is to study code that works, which does useful things.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 18:15
Agreed. Most people that come to this room will probably of not used C.
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:15
I thought I had created a ViewTouch room and was in it. If this isn't the case then I should move this to there.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 18:16
@GeneMosher yeah this is not the ViewTouch room
Gene Mosher
@GeneMosher
May 21 2016 18:16
ViewTouch was first written in C, then moved to C++. The thing about ViewTouch buttons, however, is that they can be given life by C, C++, scripts, console commands, anything.
I'll try to go to the ViewTouch room, as soon as I figure out how to.

Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid

well one is a school project, we're working at a company that developed sensors for plants which push their data to a central node. That central node parses the data and sends it to a database (which me and my team set up) and there's an interface that displays that data (which we also made and set up)
its supposed to be a cheap, modular, plug and play system

@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 20:48
but it was our first external project as students so we made a lot of mistakes and the company kind of treated us as actaul workforce

At "MoviesDB" we also need a PM
Dan

May 21 2016 20:51
yeah, there ya go; codesnip seems pretty awesome
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 20:51
it's just a lead developer, so almost anyone can be it
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 20:51
and moviesdb too; watchlist is sorta the same concept.
so there are still openings in some of them
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 20:52
Yeah it's the same. But I think it's cool, because it leads to multiple products in the same category
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 20:52
i would love to be a PM
but TIME damnit xd
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 20:52
right, i'm on watchlist and i totally support the idea of both. I think it's neat seeing them use different stacks to get to the same end concept.
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 20:52
I think the idea is to have multiple teams working on similar concepts, right?
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 20:53
I think it's lead to that, because there was a lot of interest in the watchlist concept
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 20:53
not necessarily @jaames, it's not avoided but I think that any new ideas are welcomed in this channel as well and you guys can spin up a new team built on that as well.
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 20:54
Ah, I understand. c:
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:00
Since there seems to be a lot devs that lean toward the front end side of things, how about a Chrome extention project?
Joost Jansen
@DevItWithDavid
May 21 2016 21:02
that would be cool
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:03
Cool idea! You can also setup a project with for example Parse or Firebase, then you also don't need a specific backend dev
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:05
Maybe yet another bookmarking tool or something, although I bet someone else has a better idea haha
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:05
@jaames an extension would be a neat idea
i use one in firefox that I wish I had in chrome and with more features: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/worldip/
I think it'd be cool if you could give one of these types of extensions a list of IP ranges and custom images
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:08
@mallardduck That would be a pretty interesting project, although it would be a little above my knowledge personally.
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:08
also anyone still looking for a project it looks like area feed might still need members
just saw that chat existed
@jaames that's over my head too lol but it seems like a neat concept.
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:11
@mallardduck I'd definitely suggest it to whoever the hell is in charge here (':
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:12
i mean I guess the checking IPs part isn't too hard[regex right, lol] but I just wouldn't know at all where to start when it comes to getting that sites IP from chrome, or changing any visuals to the page. I've never made an extension ever, so I wouldn't even know what language you'd do that in TBH
I think that person may or may not be @theflametrooper
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:13
I've made a basic extention before, they're written in JS with access to certain features through an API
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:14
hmm. i'm already in the watchlist group and have limited time as is...but I like this concept so I think it'd be cool if someone made it a project.

Hey
Yeh I'm the co founder along with @munsterberg ;)
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:15
Ah, good to know. (:
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:18
looks like if the extension uses the chrome.webRequest api they can see the IP that the pages request was sent to @jaames
@theflametrooper would a chrome extension be a viable project?
seems like it could be a neat tool for devs?
Vietnamese Donkey
@vietnamkong
May 21 2016 21:19
So are you guys interested in a chrome extension project? If so give me details😋
Oh yeh defiantly projects are not limited to websites or anything like that ;)
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:21
I've not done any extensions or deved too seriously in JS; but me and @jaames were thinking a chrome extension that knows the IP of the page requested and compares it to a list containing ranges of IPs and special symbols/emoji/flags/etc that would indicate where the domain/server is.
something similar to the world IP extension on firefox but in chrome
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:23
We'd need someone who really understands how that sort of thing works, though. Developing an extention isn't too difficult but handling IPs / DNS lookups / etc is a little beyond me.
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:24
I think that webRequest api serves the IP of the page to plugins for you, so if that's right I think it'd be down to using that to compare to the list of ranges to find matches.
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:28
I wouldn't really know where to go from there?
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:29
would you know how to add the icon to the address bar?
if so I think that's enough for me, cause that's the part I couldn't do. I think once we had the IP the comparison might just be solved by finding a JS library we can use to do that.
then if it hits a match show the respective icon/flag/etc in the address bar
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:31
Sure, all that is documented as far as I know. I managed it so it mustn't be too hard haha
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:31
maybe it'd have to be like how some extensions have their icon in the address bar; then we'd just set the icon to change if the page hits a match?
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:34

Pretty much yep.

My main worry is that it's not particularly beginner-friendly; creating something in similar functionality to worldip seems like it would require a lot of in-depth knowledge about how phishing attacks and DNS spoofs are actually carried out

I mean if a Chrome extention were to be a project here then a notebook, bookmark keeper or developer tool might be a better choice?
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:35
what has 'worldip' as security features?
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:36
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
Here's the link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/worldip/ c:
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:36
Yeah I saw that, but isn't it just showing information about your ip, the ip of the website, the whois information of a website, and so on?
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:38
Perhaps? I'm not 100% sure tbh, the "Protection against DNS spoofing and fake sites" part leads me to beleive it has more
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:40
Yeah, I'm not sure how you will do that. I think the "fake sites" part is just looking up a score of a virusscan company about a site
But I'm not sure
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:42
Ah I see, if that's all it's doing then it shouldn't be too difficult to replicate
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:47

Oh -- looks like whoever created worldip has a database API: http://www.wipmania.com/en/api/

Perhaps that can be used? (:

Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:48
neat, good catch
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:52
there are a lot of api's about ip address and whois information
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:53
so the idea for the cloned parts of world IP may be pretty easy then if it were to take use of those APIs
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:54
well, hm, it's limited to just spitting out a country code unless you use the 'business' option, which will be a pay-as-you go service I guess
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:54
then for any custom defined ones it'd just be a local compare of IP given from chrome vs IPs in list. personally I think it'd be need to see that feature the most so I can set the IPs of a VPS to an icon
maybe country code is enough if our focus will be a user defined list anyway tho?
anything that doesn't match the custom list gets the country code match and gets the country flag
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:56
I'm not really sure if I understand the practical use of that?
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:57
I also don't really see the use of that kind of extension :p Only to show where the site is from?
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:57
say I want to set my vps and home IP to show up as my gravitar icon. or we could just define and provide lists of IPs for common hosts?
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:57
Except for learning ofcouse
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 21:58
Perhaps details should be specified in the project chat if/when it's accepted? c:
Dan
@mallardduck
May 21 2016 21:58
like get the digital ocean IP ranges, put them in an array/list then if we hit a match then it shows the company logo
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 21:59
Why not just use a whois api to give you that information?
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:00
I think there might be a problem in finding a free one without any limitations
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 22:01
When you get a result, cache/save them. Then you need fewer api calls in the future
I don't know if it's working, but you could try haha
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:06

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but maybe this should be left for discussion elsewhere? (:

I'd love to hear any other ideas for Chrome extention projects though!!

Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 22:07
that gets you like half way to an ad blocker
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:14
That's a good point actually.
When I suggested a Chrome extention I meant more along the lines of Evernote, though.
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 22:16
more of a nacl app then
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:16
I'm not sure what that it?
Zac Cassini
@zcassini
May 21 2016 22:17
you can compile c programs for nacl and run them in chrome
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:21
Ah not so much; my thinking is that there's a disproportionate amount of frontend devs here at the moment, and a Chrome extention built with html, css and js would be great for them since they won't necessarily need a backend or even any hosting c:
Another idea is building an app with http://electron.atom.io
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 22:27
I've always wanted to do something with that
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:28
Same here, it looks pretty rad. Any ideas?
Wesley vd Sanden
@wesleyvdsanden_twitter
May 21 2016 22:28
I already joined the moviesdb project, but I've also no ideas for an app
But I'm going to sleep, it's 00:32 here, so have a nice evening!
james
@jaames
May 21 2016 22:34
Ah, sleep well. (:
I'm on the CodeSnip project already which gave me an idea;
How about something akin to https://www.lingoapp.com/ but for code snippets, built on http://electron.atom.io ?
