Jun 22 2015 19:04
@wonderchook sweet! whatcha doin’ Friday afternoon?
we put together the agenda this morning as a way to structure the conversation a bit: https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/wiki/Agenda---Community-and-Roadmap-Discussion----6-22-15
for those following along at home or reading the transcript, i’m Seth Fitzsimmons from Stamen and have been leading the development effort on the new version
Bill Conneeley (@billconn) is Stamen’s General Manager, and Sara Dean (@saraedean) is Stamen’s Director of Research and Partnerships
Dale Kunce

together, we’re trying to plot out the future of Field Papers in a way that helps facilitate all of its existing users, benefits new ones, and helps it be financially viable / sustainable for the future
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:06
my quote gets used by Stamen all over the place :)
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 19:06
Bill and Sara are working on strategic and organizational level plan within Stamen for Fieldpapers
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:06
@dalekunce you knew that was going to happen ;-)
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:07
I'm Kate Chapman I'm with the Cadasta Foundation and previous the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. Long time fan of field papers and walking papers
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:08
so, to update, we launched the new version of Field Papers at the end of May and have been doing a bit of post-launch support work since then to improve error messaging and scan processing.
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 19:09
and Stamen has been starting to workout a long-term plan for the project as well
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:09
when we caught up this morning, we were hoping you guys could help fill out various lists based on your experiences and desires
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 19:10
so assuming we are thinking about how to organize and support efforts behind Fieldpapers, what should we be thinking about feature and functionality wise
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:11
I've shared a lot about my desire to integrate it closely with OMK
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:11
I've talked to a few of you about my desire to making it more modular to embed in other workflows
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:11
+1 Kate
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:11
https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/issues represents a super vague roadmap w/ varying levels of detail, so our goal is to flesh out a list of more substantial desires
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:11
+1 on OMK integration
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:11
Platform integration seems to be a desire we hear a lot
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:12
@dalekunce @wonderchook what do you think the best way to track those sorts of things?
github issue, wiki pages, google docs?
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:12
I mean both or our issues are monsters
and not easy to put into one issue, we may want to tie them to milestones and collect that way
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:12
issues potentially, but also using something like Waffle.io to keep track of priority
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:13
@mojodna should we pull out the docs from the recent grant proposal into a couple of different milestones
especially the offline FP server
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:14
i’m a bit concerned that they’d get lost in the main issue list
but in principle, yes
i’d be in favor of extracting them from the prose
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:15
I think if they are tied to milestones that would help avoid losing them
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:15
good point
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:15
so for my part I see 3 or 4 milestones just for OMK
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:16
the 3 main points from the grant proposal are 1) offline FP server, 2) OMK integration, 3) feedback from the field
@dalekunce let’s sketch those out here and i’ll stick them in github after
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:16
FP server
would need on on a local tile store/mapnik engine
since its in a docker instance now I don't think the lift for the actual FP server part is to high
the harder part will be the integration with the other OSM stuff on the offline box
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:18
agreed
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:18
i imagine an issue for each one, ie. some way (web ideally) that sets the local tile server
some way to import a HOT Task Manager area
API to show what tiles/tasks are done
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:19
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:20
API to show how multiple FP atlases are coordinated
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:21
i’m calling the general category there “Integration API”: https://github.com/fieldpapers/fieldpapers/milestones/Integration%20API
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:23
@kate what do you want to integrate with
What api end points would be most helpful
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:24
@dalekunce are the multiple FP atlases related to the Task Manager, or is that separate?
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:24
hmmm, tempted to say all of them ;)
making atlases, uploading pages and the resulting tiles
my immediate vision would be to allow someone to plan a community mapping in Cadasta's platform and use field papers for that part. Instead of printing a map and uploading it in some other way as they might do otherwise
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:26
so really a way of integrating FP with any OSM-based site
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:26
well, I would say a site using OSM as a basemap
though I could see it going beyond OSM at some point
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:26
Could be multiple tm tasks and fp atlases that would overlap would like to see the extent and completeness when doing a larger project
Square tasks suck basically, need a way to collaborate without duplication
Bonus if it shows the age of the task or Atlas
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:28
so would the FP print the boundary of the task on it?
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:29
That would be cool
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:29
I like that - territories within the print
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:33
@dalekunce what about expanding an atlas. So as you add more tm tasks the atlas becomes bigger or is that too complicated?
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:34
@dalekunce How do tasking hierarchies work within other elements of OMK - is there a way that could translate to FP?
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:34
Need to figure that out
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:35
it sounds like the atlas becomes part a bigger concept there
i’m transcribing notes on the tasking manager stuff into fieldpapers/fieldpapers#164
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:37
We split up building and road task at the moment, would be nice to add that into omk as well
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:38
What other larger users do we think should be in this conversation about use cases / future development?
Getting more community feedback is one of our goals as we develop a longer term plan
Universities? NGOs? Government agencies? Commercial users even?
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:40
I would say someone from HOT should be involved, I'm sorta involved on that side but not completely
and then all of the broad possible users you mentioned
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:42
Yeah HOT for sure, I'd also suggest USAID and gfdrr
Both use fp a lot
I can invite world Bank
MSF as well
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:43
Great, having a good contact from both that has FP ground knowledge would be useful
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:44
I think Mikel being involved would also be good. Since he has been involved from the Tasking Manager side as well as FP experience
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:44
Yeah Mikel for sure if he has time
Pierre G for tasking manager links
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:45
I suspect there are other big users of Field Papers we aren't entirely aware of as well
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 19:46
that’s the thing that always surprises me
what’s your sense on the best way to communicate with everyone on this list on an ongoing basis?
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:46
Steve Johnson might have some good feedback
Stamen blog post would be good first step
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:47
yeah, who knows who might come out of the woodwork
I was at the PDX-OSGEO meet-up last week, lots of talk about FieldPapers
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:48
We are close to opening the floodgates!
For feedback
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:48
yeah, would it make sense to have a survey?
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:48
I've got one I've been testing
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:48
awesome
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:48
I think it would be very helpful
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:49
I find sometimes otherwise the feedback ends up being people trying to solve their problem without telling you what the problem actually is
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:49
can I send it to you two to start forwarding to some organizers / FP users?
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:49
sure no problem
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:50
Yeah, although I'm off in the woods on vacation for the next month
saraedean
@saraedean
Jun 22 2015 19:54
We're also looking for models for long-term financial sustainability for FP - so we can move away from individual / ad hoc feature development
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:55
I think there are a couple different models that might work
I think there are enough orgs with investment that maybe there is a way to get everyone to cofund a release
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 19:56
I think we could get gfdrr and USAID to fund
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:57
yeah, I bet there are others as well.
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 19:59
could gfdrr and USAID type funding be compatible with some commercialization...so for example, getting a utility company to pay for a instance that they would use for their field operations?
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 19:59
I don't see why not, the software would be under an open license
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 20:00
Depends, what is the original license of fp?
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 20:00
the original version is GPLv2
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 20:00
ideally we'd have a mix of NGO, university, government and some commercial sources of funding
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 20:00
i need to figure out how that applies to the new version—we haven’t tacked a specific license on it yet (though we really need to)
@saraedean had to roll and @billconn and i need to turn our attention elsewhere.
thanks for meeting up! this a great first step
Kate Chapman
@wonderchook
Jun 22 2015 20:05
yes, thanks for meeting-up. I think we should start scheduling something generally 2x a month (after the 4th of July though)
and advertise it
Bill Conneely
@billconn
Jun 22 2015 20:06
yep, thanks for pushing this along folks. We'll keep up the momentum on our side.
Seth Fitzsimmons
@mojodna
Jun 22 2015 20:06
@wonderchook good call. might just be a block of a couple of us, but we gotta start somewhere!
Dale Kunce
@dalekunce
Jun 22 2015 20:08
Thanks guys
