@mojodna Ah, awesome, thank you! Are you suggesting there might already exist somewhere, a shapefile somebody has already created, or that I could use that python library to generate one? My google-fu didn't find a layer to use, but I might've been searching the wrong things.
mattcen @mattcen doesn't even know how big such a shapfile would be. Presumably not too large given it's just a collection of monotone images that are 99% empty.

Ah wait, shapefiles can be vectors, right? In which case it'd be completely manageable.

Ah cool, so it looks like there are UTM shapefiles here, and they appear, according to the XML file inside one of them, to be licensed for general use: http://earth-info.nga.mil/GandG/coordsys/grids/universal_grid_system.html#zzd1
