@mdoube Yeah, MeshLab is pretty great, but even so some of the features would be nice to have within FIJI to minimize program-hopping. We were talking about 3D a lot at the hackathon, much of which has been consolidated to this forum post. It would be wonderful if you/BoneJ could weigh in on that thread. As you know there is code for STL/OBJ writing in 3D viewer at the moment , but one has to make very direct calls into classes to make it happen without going through a display step. The imagej-ops crew have been consolidating a ton of code into ops in a way that makes it very easy to use (and backed by IJ2/Imglib2), which is beginning to include geometry operations. There are a lot of things you all are ahead in, especially when it comes to 3D measurements, which might be a nuisance to port, but perhaps there are some core functions (mesh file IO for example) that could be migrated to more core ImageJ libraries so we can get rid of some duplication.

@kephale Note that @rimadoma will be visiting Madison for a few weeks soon, so that we can plan out how best to proceed with BoneJ2 functionality. Of course, I will be encouraging him to contribute algorithms to ImageJ Ops. :musical_note:

@axtimwalde Did you resolve the question about TrakEM2 with respect to Java 3D? Anything you want to discuss? I am back from traveling now, and generally available during the days. The main strategy for Java 8 is to migrate components to Java 8 one by one, which means that new versions go to the 'Java-8' update site instead of 'ImageJ' or 'Fiji'. But the current downloads of Fiji now have the Java-8 update site on by default. A later step (maybe soon) will be to add some notice to ImageJ telling users about this change, and giving them an easy button to click to enable Java-8.

@ctrueden aha cool, that probably covers my comment then!
