@fjug The call routine does nothing more than call a Java function. You can call Java functions directly from MATLAB.
Also note that all the IJM commands are defined in a SciJava plugin. You can write your own if you need to!

@fjug You just write it how you'd write it in Java, with a fully qualified Java class. E.g.:
planeSize = loci.formats.FormatTools.getPlaneSize(r);

I started playing with it and I think Matthias is also looking at it now...
