Don’t bother learning how to code and fix things yourself—no one (except for the Fiji devs, apparently) has time to do that.
There has been a significant bump in complexity for new plugin programmers between IJ1 and IJ2. If I was starting out now from the same starting point as in c. 2008-9 (curious and interested but no coding background), I'm not sure I'd have the same easy wins that got me hooked. But maybe time will tell and a new breed may emerge: IJ1 was specifically designed with user-developers in mind.

And it's true, time is a limiting factor, especially if you want to do correct engineering practice (which multiplies the time investment by maybe an order of magnitude?), and if you have other responsibilities like running a group or doing clinics.

Would be interested to know the background of the plugin contributors these days - has there been a drift to comp sci/eng, or is it a similar population with a few of us recovering clinicians / natural sciences ppl rolling our own?
