@/all Just came across the stipend rules for GSoC 2017... They have implemented a new policy for the stipend distributed to participants from different part of the world. For India (and most other asian countries) the stipend is reduced to 2400 USD from 5500USD...

@aviaryan @SaptakS I am curious what people think. Not sure, if this is a good idea. Looks like they try to be more fair. Does this step make sense?

@SaptakS Well they reduced the stipend by more than half. An abnormaly high stipend was one of the few factors why GSoC was such a great thing in Indian colleges.

@mariobehling well in a way it does. It won't just lure people based on money but those who are genuinely interested in contributing. So we may say the percentage conversion of GSoCers into upstream contributors to rise subsequently... But seeing it from another perspective, the participation during GSoC may reduce a lot... And many open source organisations do get a major part of their work done during GSoC... A lot many awesome projects came up from GSoC itself...

@mariobehling I guess they did this considering the fact that Asian economies are weak. But still I think this contradicts equality rights of a student. A student living in US can will get twice more than Indian student for the same work. US student can buy 2 macbooks whereas Indian only 1. :-P

@aviaryan @SaptakS I am not sure, what is the exact plan of them. Stephanie and Cat mentioned this step to us before, but they were still figuring out the details. As this is out now, I wonder what this means for FOSSASIA (if we get accepted). Google said they will not reduce the overall funding of the program. As most of our students come from Asia would that mean the orgs would actually get more student slots? Did you find anything about that?

I didn't find any such mention... I will check if there is some info about mentoring orgs...
More than the reduction though the attempt I feel was to make a justified stipend depending on the cost of living and such factors in a country but it still seems unfair that different locations get different stipend...

Agreed @SaptakS , As I pointed out above, there are some things which are available at roughly the same cost at different locations in the world. So keeping that in mind, this seems unfair to students.
But as @mariobehling said, I guess Google wants to get more developers on board. Hence this move.
Most of the students are selected from Asia so this change in stipend will allow Google to almost double the batch size given they keep the program budget constant.

As this is very unfair.
People who have done Gsoc last two years they got $11000 but now it will be $4800
India is largest country with Gsocers

They should instead provide a free macbook, then there won't be any cost of living issues
But if they do actually increase the slots, it'd work out for the better
