if there's ever any unlikely future situation where you can't or don't want to use Tor, either in admin workstation to server communication or server-to-server, wireguard is a really cool technology. only requires a kernel module and you get an in-kernel VPN with state-of-the-art/best encryption, the way you setup and add/remove peers is very intuitive

Hello everyone! Our standup is in 5 minutes at the usual location:

Anyone is welcome to participate! Notes are taken on an Etherpad and will be moved to the GitHub wiki by the end of the day.

@zenmonkeykstop
what's the timeline looking like for cutting rc4?
Jølly Good
@good-lly
@rmol hi, please can you escalate "michaela-bot" for reviewer permissions in weblate? She is unable to fix the rest of czech translations ... but should be - maybe some bug?
rmol
@rmol
@good-lly She should be all set now. Let me know if not.

Quick Q but no worries if it’s not quick: What chunk of code in SD creates the desktop shortcuts for the source and journo interfaces in Tails?
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
I can answer that, one sec ...
the icons are defined in the jinja templates here and deployed via ansible (securedrop-admin tailsconfig): https://github.com/freedomofpress/securedrop/tree/develop/install_files/ansible-base/roles/tails-config/templates
the shortcuts are marked executable in a hook that's executed everytime the network bounces
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
the network hook explains the delay in rendering the icons, the shortcuts aren't marked "trusted" until that code runs, and tails doesn't show the icons
David Huerta
@huertanix
@eloquence Thanks! In this case just helping figure out a UI inconsistency in opening Tor Browser in Tails: https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/15855.
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
let me see if I can repro what you're describing
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
@huertanix if you edit the .desktop file in nano and add StartupNotify=true as a new line, it will behave the same way as the other shortcuts (show a spinner during launch)
the .desktop file can be edited directly within Tails as a regular user in the ~/Desktop directory, if you want to try
Conor Schaefer
@conorsch
^ now that's worth an issue in the SD repo!
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
heh you beat me to it :) @huertanix if you have time to file please go ahead, otherwise will do so after release
Conor Schaefer
@conorsch
@eloquence can i trouble you for a backport of #4802? once that's up, i'll take another pass through the outstanding work, and write up an EOD report for @kushaldas to take over
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
of course
thanks for the review :)
Conor Schaefer
@conorsch

@kushaldas here's the remaining work blocking rc4:

  1. Review and merge translations backport at freedomofpress/securedrop#4827
  2. Review and merge docs backport at freedomofpress/securedrop#4830

Technically 2) isn't rc-critical, since it's docs-only, but if that goes in as well, then rc4 encompasses the entirety of what we expect to be in 1.0.0 (pending smooth QA, naturally).

Please target the above two tests, then proceed with creating the rc4 tag and uploading new debs. That'll unblock the rest of the team to proceed with rc4 QA when we they log in!

@1000101
@rmol do you think I could review Slovak language? To be completely honest with you, I made part of the translation but I'm worried we will not find anyone else soon-ish. I've already reviewed and corrected some parts.
Kushal Das
@kushaldas
RC4 is now available for QA now.
Debs should be available in new few minutes
Kevin O'Gorman
@zenmonkeykstop
:tada:
rmol
@rmol
@1000101 Translation for 1.0.0 was completed yesterday, as it's being released today. We missed getting a few new languages into the supported list because we couldn't get them reviewed in time, so we are definitely going to be talking to you and others in the next few days to make sure they're included in the next release.
1000101
@1000101
@rmol wonderful, thanks a lot!
Kevin O'Gorman
@zenmonkeykstop
I'm taking the NUC5 clean install entry for rc4 - if anyone has cycles and can run through a HW cron-apt scenario please do so
If you do run through cron-apt, make sure to take a 0.14.0 backup beforehand to help verify the restore checks
rmol
@rmol
@zenmonkeykstop I can do hw cron-apt on NUC7.
Kevin O'Gorman
@zenmonkeykstop
Thanks @rmol
Kushal Das
@kushaldas
fresh install on vm looks good
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
@zenmonkeykstop @emkll whenever you have a break in QA, freedomofpress/securedrop#4657 should be in line with our discussion yesterday. Need Mickael sign-off given threat model updates.
Kushal Das
@kushaldas
That is the last remaining PR
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
there is also another builder hash update freedomofpress/securedrop#4833
Kushal Das
@kushaldas
oh, the one @emkll created today
Erik Moeller
@eloquence
yep
Conor Schaefer
@conorsch
i'll take #4833 now, will kick off build locally
