Nicholas Sofroniew
@sofroniewn
@rgbkrk, @freeman-lab and i have been thinking about the similarities between front-end web programing, game engines, and complex animal behavior experiments
@sofroniewn @jwittenbach very relevant to our discussion yesterday
Jason Wittenbach
@jwittenbach
@freeman-lab wow, really relevant!
looks like they’ve nailed the low-level stack for this type of thing
though they still leave a big burden on the user to figure out how to run all of this tech
and they seem to be espousing a 1 App = 1 Pipeline model
so I think there’s lots of room for improvement in terms of both ease of use and composability
this is something a lot of users aren’t going to be comfortable with:
docker run --privileged -ti --rm \
 -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
 -v D:\singularity_images:/output \
 filo/docker2singularity \
 bids/example:0.0.4

@freeman-lab
ha, yeah, agreed, but it's a good start!
they benefit a lot from having a more or less standard file format to start with
Jason Wittenbach
@jwittenbach
yeah, that’s a huge boon
their particular subfield has had a lot longer to settle on that though

@syncrostone
@mayajay and I were just discussing Kernel this morning! @mikolalysenko
Mikola Lysenko
@mikolalysenko
hah! talked to some dude who worked there briefly at the codeneuro hackathon last saturday
then saw this thing in the news
not sure how I feel about that project. don't know enough about neuroscience to really say how feasible it is, but it sounds like they are taking some very dangerous risks
in other news: anyone in the south bay is welcome to come along on a picnic tomorrow
going to be meeting at the palo alto caltrain station
not sure where we will end up or what food we will get, location + food pairing is selected randomly by computer

@freeman-lab finally hit the mother lode for the fly behavior project: http://www.princeton.edu/~ndaw/d10.pdf
