I'm part of the DBnomics project which is similar to Datahub.io, but just for economics. Basically, we store datasets on git repos, first as the provider publish them, then converted in a format that is not unlike Tabular Data Package (described here).
This is very exciting - i actually produced first version of data package spec back in 2006-2007 for openeconomics.net project when I was a full-time economist!
BTW have you seen the core data effort https://datahub.io/docs/core-data - a lot of the datasets are community curated.
Would DBnomics-packaged data useful to you?
Could the "DBnomics data model" become a new Data Package profile? Would that be even useful to anyone?
Certainly think so!
@johanricher if you'd like to talk more about DBnomics, DataHub etc let me know - it sounds really interesting.
And there's also a dedicated gitter channel for DataHub stuff http://gitter.im/datahubio/chat
