@gdamore
I set this up so we can chat about -core outside of IRC.
or rather outside of #illumos
Serapheim Dimitropoulos
@sdimitro
That's great! Thanks Garrett
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
You're welcome !
I’m hoping that we’ll get enough folks interested here that I can start having integrations code reviewed. :-)

@gdamore
Happy New Year everyone! :-)

Happy New Year! :)

@sdimitro
Hi guys! I just submitted a pull request (#158) that attempts to fix issue #9. Reviews are welcome!
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
Thanks sdmitro, I’ll take a look.
Serapheim Dimitropoulos
@sdimitro
Hey Garrett! About issue #163
I can take care of the actionscripts for now and we can coordinate with Peter Tribble in the mean time about the SVR4 packaging. We can make a separate issue later if we need to. How does this sound?
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
I'm working with Peter for now. Go ahead with the script removal though.
Serapheim Dimitropoulos
@sdimitro
Sounds good!

@gdamore
Folks wanting to try new Dell PERC hardware can look at #164

@Happy-Dude
@gdamore, if I want to get more into illumos internals and contributing, what kind of resources would you recommend?
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
I’d start with trying build illumos itself.
also there is #illumos on freenode, which has a vastly larger audience than this channel :-)
otherwise, you really need to have some idea where to start. there are a bunch of ideas on the GSoC page for example, but you need to think about what areas interest you the most.
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
would I do that in an illumos-based distribution? (smartos/ etc.?) or can that be done in any proper *nix environment?
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
right now, OpenIndiana is the best environment to build illumos itself.
You can build specific forks of illumos on the various distros — e.g. OmniOS has a way to build their fork, SmartOS theirs, and so forth.
but for vanilla illumos, OpenIndiana is the only option at present
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
I linger in the #illumos channel too :) -- though I decided that I need to filter the information intake and selectively consume information that I want
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
lol
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
I joined here/ started a conversation here because illumos-core's goals were interesting/ tangible (from my pov)
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
I don’t monitor IRC very closely — too much noise...
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
yeahhh...
I'm trying to limit my "intake" to 3 or 4 projects I'm really interested in, and even then, the infodump is immense
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
sure. right now I’m focused on trying to get most of what we have in illumos-core upstreamed.
mostly because I’m afraid that I’m spread so thin that unless other parties step forward, I can’t effectively maintain illumos-core and the several other projects I own. (mangos, nanomsg, etc.)
that… and frankly a lot of good stuff in -core needs to be upstreamed anyway.
(i.e. pretty much all the POSIX stuff.)
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
think there might ever be an opportunity for a mentorship-like thing?
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
absolutely.
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
this stuff really interests me, but I always have no idea where to start. something smaller and more goal-oriented (like illumos-core) seems like a good place to start
Garrett D'Amore
@gdamore
I have brought up several developers over the years.
yeah, but you need to choose a smaller goal still — something that specifically interests you.
(or interests your employer. :-)
if you’re casting about for ideas, the GSoC idea list isn’t a bad place to start...
Stanley Chan
@Happy-Dude
also, illumos-core code changes slower, so I can take a look at the patches/ issues myself and gain a better understanding of the code on my own
