so i tried upgrading, and it said it would perform a migration
i stopped the migration so that I could backup first
(upgrading was via the fab file)

@arikfr

did you stop before the migration started?

well wait...
guess i have a different problem now
not enough disk space for a backup
lol
sudo -u redash pg_dump > backup_filename.sql

:)
you can try to skip the query results table, which probably takes most of the sapce. although then it might be a problem to restore
Cory

that shouldn't be an issue if we lose that table
should i just log into the database and truncate the table?
Arik Fraimovich
@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 14:13
no
that will result in all sorts of bad stuff (because there is a reference from queries to the latest query result)
newer versions of re:dash truncate this with a periodic task
but for now, if space is an issue, you can tell pg_dump to exclude this table (should be one of the options)

@clevinson what version do you run now?
Cory
@clevinson
Sep 21 2015 15:13
0.6.1
Arik Fraimovich
@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 15:13
got it. so yes, in this version I'm pretty sure the cleanup process was off by default... once you upgrade to the latest, it will be on by default and after a few days you will probably see query results shrink significantly
btw, I also recommend turning off all re:dash processes off before upgrading as some of the migrations might be heavy
if you can't get pg_dump to work properly, and upgrading isn't urgent for you, you can enable the cleanup process and wait a few days for it to shrink

Sep 21 2015 15:15
i think it's looking for the newest version, even tho the migrations never ran
Arik Fraimovich
@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 15:16
maybe when you stopped it, it causes fabric to skip migrations but it did link to the new version. do you have the fabric script run output?
if not, you can check what /opt/redash/current links to
and if needed, correct the link to the previous version + restart
Cory
@clevinson
Sep 21 2015 15:17
yeah, current links to 0.8.1
the backup just ran successfully
i used a mounted disk volume and all is good now

@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 15:18
great, so just stop the processes (supervisorctl stop all) and run the upgrade again

where can i read up on alerts?
Arik Fraimovich
@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 15:22
:( nowhere...
but the gist is:
  1. make sure to configure email provider and host: https://github.com/EverythingMe/redash/blob/master/redash/settings.py#L94-L105
  2. when creating an alert, you pick the query to work on, and the column to use value from.
  3. you get subscribed to the alert you created by default, and others can subscribe too.
  4. the alert is checked everytime the query is being executed (so if the query isn't scheduled, the alert won't fire)

Hi @arikfr , great work on the release, love the new users ui. One thing I can't seem to find is groups? Is this still accessible from anywhere in the UI or will I need to access this through CLI now?
Arik Fraimovich
@arikfr
Sep 21 2015 17:42
@rm420 the api supports group editing but in the UI I simplified it, and you can just change the user's membership in the admin group with the checkbox in settings. Do you use groups for more than that?

@arikfr I use groups to restrict certain users to just the "view-query" permission. Reason being is so that I can present a dashboard to non-technical members of the team in order for them to monitor certain dashboards. In the future I would also like to be able to restrict users to individual dashboards as well but I'm not sure how this would currently fit into your road-map. Maybe I'll take a crack at writing it myself too

@rm420 got it. I'll add to my list to add UI for groups, although it will take me some time, as it's holidays season over here and I'm currently working on UI for the parameters feature.
@rm420 giving permissions for a single dashboard, through invite links will be great addition .
