Before I go down a rabbit hole, i was wondering if there was an approachable way of creating a chart with a selectable variable - e.g. if I'm charting traffic per machine_id, having a dropdown or textfield where I can inject the machine_id.

@gallamine you have two options:
  1. filters/multi filters: http://demo.redash.io/queries/143 and http://demo.redash.io/queries/144. This will work well, if you have relatively small amount of data (total of ~1K rows. because it retrieves all the data, and filters on the client).
  2. parameters: http://demo.redash.io/queries/146/source?p_action=create currently parameters don't have UI, so your only option is a workarounds like: http://demo.redash.io/queries/520#table (try clicking on a user id). but I'm working on the interface and it should be available soon (next week?).

those are nice examples.
do you anticipate the interface you're working on would include doing parameter injection at the dashboard level or just the chart level?

yes. parameters can be applied to a dashboard (the example I linked , links to a dashboard) and the UI will support that. as for filters, you can enable dashboard level filters, it's alpha quality so there is no UI to enable it. but assuming you have admin permissions, you can browse to /admin/dashboard and then check "enable_global_filters" (or similar name) for the dashboard you want

Does anyone know if re:dash allows us to embed charts into an iframe?
