@etisdew
Personally, I know of atleast a few ways right now but some more obviously wrong than others.
Would you be open to an attempt?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@etisdew Depends on how simple/elegant it is. I'm leaning towards just keeping it lean with no customization

You could create an issue with proposal first before jumping into the code, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/sidecar/issues

i have a problem,i use the gitter in China,but sometimes i can`t open the gitter webside,does anyone know how to proxy gitter?(i use the sidecar.gitter.im in my own webside,i try to use f12 to find the urls link to gitter,but there are too many links,sorry for my poor English,could any friend help me? )
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

Hey @CrazyBoyM, are you using a VPN? Why do you need to know the specific URLs?

What do you exactly mean but "unable to open the Gitter website"? What error or behavior are you seeing?

Colin Alworth
@niloc132
it looks like https://sidecar.gitter.im/ is down right now, is this expected?
Tomas
@viktomas
We had an outage on Friday @niloc132 gitlab-com/gl-infra/infrastructure#10270. Thanks for leaving a message here.
Colin Alworth
@niloc132
@viktomas can you confirm that sidecar.gitter.im should still be down, even thought that issue is closed?
Tomas
@viktomas
@niloc132 https://sidecar.gitter.im/ should be online. Thanks for double-checking. I'm able to access it. Is it possible that your browser caches DNS? Would hard reload (CMD+SHIFT+R) help?
Colin Alworth
@niloc132
@viktomas thanks - i discovered via ping that it was resolving to 127.0.0.1, and so it was my local pi.hole that was blocking it. i wonder if it would be worth your effort to see if you can appeal to them to get your domain whitelisted as not an ad/malware/tracker server?
Tomas
@viktomas
@niloc132 Thanks for the more detailed investigation, I contacted pi.hole with request to take sidecar out of their blacklist :)
Colin Alworth
@niloc132
@viktomas the domain is explicitly blacklisted on what i think is one of the default lists (at least I haven't configured this much past "behave as a docker container") https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts:
# [gitter.im]
0.0.0.0 sidecar.gitter.im
Colin Alworth
@niloc132
that comes from https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts/blob/master/data/adaway.org/hosts... which automatically copies it from https://github.com/AdAway/adaway.github.io/, which first added it in this commit: AdAway/adaway.github.io@0aa0899, which in turn got it from https://github.com/jawz101/MobileAdTrackers/ (which is now unmaintained)
Tomas
@viktomas
@niloc132 Thank you. I've created an issue with your findings :+1: gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2529

Hi, today I can not chat in Gitter/sidecar because it can not log the user in. However, I remember the same code works days before.
I found the following message in chrome console:
A cookie associated with a cross-site resource at http://gitter.im/ was set without the `SameSite` attribute. It has been blocked, as Chrome now only delivers cookies with cross-site requests if they are set with `SameSite=None` and `Secure`. You can review cookies in developer tools under Application>Storage>Cookies and see more details at https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/5088147346030592 and https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/5633521622188032.

Hello, is there any easy way to modifty the size of the chat, for someone know js or css a little? I find lots of 'use your own css' or 'use .gitter-chat-embed' but no exactly answer could tell me what to do...
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@szthanatos It's hard to know what you want. This changes the size to smaller for example. Just add this CSS to your page somewhere
.gitter-chat-embed {
    top: 60%;
    left: 70%;
}

@xrpdevs
Isn't this project entirely pointless if gitter.im's X-Frame-Options is set to DENY?
I can't be the only one with this problem - I've searched for an answer but there is nothing relevant (that I've been able to find, at least) which doesn't involve having admin access to the gitter.im server itself.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@xrpdevs If you use Sidecar, you won't run into any of the X-Frame-Options problems. It's not applied to the /~embed route
xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
I just copied the code from the sidecar.gitter.im page and it gives that error.
Do I have to change the route somewhere? Shouldn't this already be set in the example embed code?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@xrpdevs Should work out of the box with the code you can copy/paste from https://sidecar.gitter.im/

For reference trying it out now, here it is working https://jsfiddle.net/71ufowd5/

xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Sorry, complete n00b to gitter.im..
That's the thing, it didn't - Neither in Chrome or Firefox (Linux). Will check out the fiddle now.
Yes the fiddle works fine. Maybe I'll try to create a static page and see if it works that way. The code is embedded in the footer of the latest (self hosted) wordpress.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@xrpdevs For reference, Sidecar only works with public rooms

Which room are you trying to use it with? Can you link your wordpress site?

xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Using it with a room I created for our github repo which allows anyone to join (so assuming that makes it public? )
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@xrpdevs It looks like you're using it with http://gitter.im/xrpdevs which isn't public, that's a one to one room with you
xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Yes, sorry perhaps I'm misunderstanding how I need to set up a room so that it is public..
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@xrpdevs Maybe you meant to use https://gitter.im/xrpdevs/community

In that case, you should enter xrpdevs/community into the room name field on https://sidecar.gitter.im/

xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
ahh I see, community was the default room name created when I set it up. Could be useful if "community" is assumed if only the top level is specified?
Thanks for your assistance
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

You're welcome :slight_smile:

We could validate the input field there for anything that doesn't have a slash. It's obvious that xrpdevs is a private room and could suggest xrpdevs/community

It would be nice to have an overall API validation call there to see if it's public and have an error message for that as well. Some people get tripped up

xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Still having issues. I'm currently signed in to github, when I click through to sign in (a separate window appears) I'm still not logged in. Perhaps cookies got screwed up due to it being misconfigured before. I'll clear cookies and try again.
Working in FF, rechecking with chrome now
Could it have something to do with Chrome's new policy to block third party cookies which I read about?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@xrpdevs Could be 🤔
xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Was just a cookie problem as worked fine after clearing them. Possibly a "bug" there somewhere. Should have maybe saved cookies in case the information would have been useful to fix something.
Oh - sorry - correction - I'm still not being signed in to the chat in chrome. Ill enable 3rd party cookies and see if that makes a difference.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@xrpdevs Seems like you're running into https://gitlab.com/gitterHQ/webapp/-/issues/2441#note_393082580 but we did make for a fix for it at the time
xrpdevs
@xrpdevs
Tried applying steps from that issue and no joy. Connecting using https:// so should be fulfilling requirements. I should be able to add gitter.im to the whitelist, but would be nice if users didn't need to do this.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@xrpdevs From a fresh Chrome profile and no cookies I've tested signing into Sidecar and going through the full sign in process through GitHub. And tried if you're already signed into GitHub. Both of them seem to work.

I think there may be some bugged flow but not sure how to nail it down or have reproduction steps
