@esden Looks like it may be a problem with Node v10 and gulp 3.9.x, nodejs/node#20325

Here are my versions,

$ node -v
v6.14.2
$ gulp -v
[23:55:57] CLI version 3.9.0
[23:55:57] Local version 3.9.1

@esden Just had two others try out http://update.gitter.im/osx/Gitter-4.1.0.dmg and it opened fine for them (one of them had macOS 10.13.4)

Any luck getting the build to work with a lesser version of Node.js?

Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@esden Any update? I rebuilt the desktop app and you can try it here http://update.gitter.im/osx/Gitter-4.1.0-test-build2.dmg (nothing changed code-wise, just ran the build script again)
Piotr Esden-Tempski
@esden
hi @MadLittleMods no I did not have time to dig into it more. I will look into that bit later today. Thanks for the rebuild, a quick test with the new build is generating the same error. I need to look into some way of figuring out why my OS installation is considering it a broken bundle. Need more information. Will get back to you on that when I have a moment to test more. Sorry for the delay...
Piotr Esden-Tempski
@esden
OK, managed to fix the issue for me. All files from the bundle had the xattr com.apple.quarantine set. That does make sense as it is downloaded, so the security system needs the application to be approved. For some reason instead of asking for that permission it was showing that stupid error: "gitter is damaged can't be opened".
The solution that worked, was opening the terminal, going into /Applications and running sudo xattr -cr Gitter.app. This removed the com.apple.quarantine attribute, and now Gitter.app starts up without any problems. Sorry for the trouble and noise, but if someone asks you about this issue you can tell them to do the above and see if it helps. :)
I am not sure I can reproduce the issue I had. My assumption is that when I installed V4.0.0 and confirmed that it is allowed to start, I have had it open while I was overwriting it with V4.1.0. Then when I closed the old version and tried to open the new one something went wrong, and it did something strange to my OS X internal state information about Gitter.app that is not saved in xattr. I guess I triggered some rare corner case bug there. But that is obviously all speculation. :)

@esden Mind submitting a merge request to document the problem and your solution in the README under a FAQ section, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/desktop/ ? We can also put the "Tray Icon on Ubuntu" section under the FAQ

Thanks for the details on your solution :heart:

Gitter token leak security issue notification, http://blog.gitter.im/2018/06/11/gitter-token-leak-security-issue-notification/

tldr;

  • Mainly affected Windows/Linux users with desktop app v3
  • Your tokens have already been revoked and no action is needed
  • Download the latest v4 desktop app, http://gitter.im/apps

Anyone know where I can find system requirements for v4 of desktop app?
I've got clients that can't login anymore with v3 on Mac OS X 10.8.5.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@izzaboo There aren't any system requirements documented. It is a NW.js application like the last one but using the latest version nw@0.30.2

Hi folks, have yas ever considered providing an AppImage for this app? Not all Linux users use Deb-based distros, AppImages are application bundles that will run on virtually any distro, with their only hard dependency being filesystem in user space (FUSE), which comes pre-installed on most popular distros. Those for which it doesn't come pre-installed (e.g. CentOS), almost always have it in their official repos.
So it is a better way of providing this app for Linux.
Brenton Horne
@fusion809_gitlab
Nvm found the snap, although AppImages do have advantages over snap (e.g. no root privileges needed, it works on more distros (not all distros have snapd in their repos)).
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@fusion809_gitlab There are has been some community movement for other distros (snap, .rpm) but we currently only officially distribute .deb. Merge request welcome, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/desktop/

Hey all, sorry to be a bother, but can somone tell me how to log out on OSX?
There is not log out button. And deleting the account doesn’t work.
Is there some file I can delete?
Also, Enable Developer Tools seems to do nother as well...
If i could get to that I could run window.location = ‘/logout’;
I’m on Mojave, btw.

@gamut
So, I found the problem
There is a sign out link only when you show the app in the menu bar. When you uncheck that box, you have no way to sign out.

Hello everyone, Mua from Cameroon, open source enthusiast and seeking to contribute to gitter. I just cloned the gitter desktop app and was going through the readme . All is well and i saw this section you could add your keys and credentials in nwapp/oauth.json. I don't see that file in my repo. Any help would be grateful thanks
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@muarachmann You have to create it yourself
muarachmann
@muarachmann
oh ok i see thanks. Can this be included in the docs? and also if that is done can i just start it with the npm start command
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@muarachmann Ye, feel free to submit a merge request to update the docs

@MadLittleMods can you please review gitlab-org/gitter/desktop!214 and gitlab-org/gitter/desktop!213

Gitter Desktop stopped working for me for a few weeks now (Windows 10)
the app doesn't open properly, it looks like it stays minimized in the background all the time
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@tooomm If you try to open it from the tray icon, does the window appear? Maybe you have the launch hidden option on,

tooomm
@tooomm
Haha, No :D
I really can't open the app at all. There is no way for me to display the interface.
gitter.png
I also just deinstalled and freshly installed from the webpage today
Tomas
@viktomas
@tooomm I can't reproduce the issue, I downloaded win 10 VirtualBox machine (https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/) and installed Gitter successfully. You could try deleting app data after uninstalling (in my case the data were in C:\Users\IEUser\AppData\Local\Gitter)
tooomm
@tooomm
i will try that!
the uninstaller should catch those too... :see_no_evil:
tooomm
@tooomm
deleting the remaining data did the trick, thank you @viktomas
too bad the uninstaller didn't solve that on it's own and didn't clean everything up :/
Tomas
@viktomas
@tooomm I agree, our team is too small at to moment to fully support non-web clients. There is an existing issue for the uninstall not cleaning up properly (gitlab-org/gitter/desktop#175) Any help is appreciated.
@tooomm Glad I could help :space_invader:
