that is from web app

@MadLittleMods
@uuttff8 Let's move to https://gitter.im/gitterHQ/api for more discussion
Anton Kuzmin
@uuttff8
@MadLittleMods I don't think this is a problem, my app will always fetch new username
ok, my new questions will be in https://gitter.im/gitterHQ/api
Anton Kuzmin
@uuttff8
anyone user signed in through not a GitHub? for a test pls
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
am I reading this right; to build the desktop app I need to also build webapp for it to somehow embed?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@uuttff8 I can test with you, let's move to https://gitter.im/gitterHQ/api
@sparr Correct, the desktop app is just a wrapper around the webapp
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
What I'm looking for is all the steps required to go from zero to a built gitter desktop client; the same thing I would get from downloading and extracting gitter_VERSION_amd64.deb
sorry, notification was unclear and I thought what you were saying to uuttff8 was for me at first
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr If you build https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/desktop/, that is gitter_VERSION_amd64.deb and it points at https://gitter.im/ for the webapp
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
oh, drat
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr If you want to customize the left-menu, you will need to build https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/desktop/ but pointing locally at your own webapp (http://localhost:5000/)
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
so much for my plan for changing the channel name shortener function locally
I don't think I want to be running that separately. I take it there's no existing workflow for packaging them together?
@sparr There is no package in that sense. The desktop app just points at a certain URL. So you can point it at production https://gitter.im/ or your local copy http://localhost:5000/
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
yeah, I think to make this work I'd need to be able to build both, and write a wrapper that launches the webapp when the desktop client starts, and kill it when it ends
a little outside the scope of what I'm up for today
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr Actually thinking about it more, it would be tricky because you still want to access production data, just with your own frontend which isn't really supported for others
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
guess I'll just live with the channel list being partially useless :/
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr We could make this easy though and add the full name as a hidden element in the HTML. Then you could show it with your own custom CSS
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
or make it a tooltip
or, thinking bigger, a discord-like option to group rooms by [what's the word for a gitter "server"?]
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr Tooltip sounds good! You can add the title="" attribute to public/js/vue/left-menu/components/list-item.vue#L58
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
yeah
I think I'm out of steam for trying to build gitter today. If I end up spending more time on the platform, I'll take another run at this.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@sparr A server in our terms would be a "Community".

It sounds like you are after the community view which is tracked by gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/-#2210

Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
[how] can I turn off notifications for mentions, for a person or room or globally?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr It's not possible to mute a user yet. You can track gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/-#370
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
thanks. gonna have to log out, then. thanks for the help and guidance.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@sparr If someone is harassing you, send an email to support@gitter.im with the details and we can deal with it
@sparr You're welcome, have a good evening!
Clarence "Sparr" Risher
@sparr
not harassing. it's you. probably nothing wrong with what you're doing, it just doesn't mesh with my "pay attention to things that beep and flash" workflow.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
Ahh, can avoid pinging you in our continued conversation then :+1:
