Hi guys. Let's say I've seen an interesting message, and I want to "save" it for later, is there a way to do so?
I ask because bookmarking every permalink is a bit of a pain
Vyacheslav
@Uthering
Hello :wave: Does gitter support threads?
Tomas
@viktomas
@lppedd No, at the moment there are only permalinks. Would you imagine something like a "star" functionality?
@Uthering : threads are coming! :slight_smile: gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#741 the early implementation is behind a threaded-conversations feature toggle which can be toggled on at https://next.gitter.im/
Vyacheslav
@Uthering
@viktomas very nice :)
Tomas
@viktomas
There is a bug in threaded messages right now gitlab-org/gitter/webapp!1591. That means that everyone sees the 1 reply indicator but it breaks the site a bit when you click on it with the feature toggle off. The fix is deployed in next/staging and it's going to production soon.
Edoardo Luppi
@lppedd
@viktomas absolutely! Much like what Telegram or WhatsApp do. It's the most useful thing ever.
Having an overview of all the starred messages per channel would be awesome.
Tomas
@viktomas
@lppedd that sounds like a good idea. I haven't been able to find an existing issue for it. Please feel free to create one https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/issues
Edoardo Luppi
@lppedd
@viktomas okay, I'll open a new issue. Maybe other users in the chartoom could give their opinions.
But anyway, it's a feature I almost look for everywhere.

I love using Gitter as an example of anonymous read access. I just posted a screenshot to thelounge/thelounge#3398

@robertvb
Hi guys, do you know if there is a way to add a message to a git commit from gitter chat? it would be useful for us to keep aligned gitter conversations and git messages.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
:point_up: September 11, 2019 3:34 AM @lppedd @viktomas You can track gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#365
:point_up: September 11, 2019 11:29 AM @robertvb You can add a permalink to the commit description. This will jump you directly to the chat message, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/blob/develop/docs/messages.md#permalinks
:point_up: September 11, 2019 7:11 AM @pdurbin Thanks for the love 🤗
Robert
@robertvb
@MadLittleMods thanks Eric!, but what I wanted is to add my gitter message to a commit at github.com directly from gitter chatroom. Is that possible?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@robertvb Ahh, I see. So it would have to be a comment on the commit with a Gitter permalink. This sounds very closely related to https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/402

Mind creating an issue about "Add comment to commit when mentioned on Gitter", https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/issues

Robert
@robertvb
@MadLittleMods Thanks, I will do so then :) it would be very welcome just to keep aligned github/gitlab comments with gitter conversations
and btw, do you know if it is possible to sign up gitter using just an email address? instead of using OAuth with github, gitlab or twitter?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@robertvb It's not possible. Only OAuth sign in, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/webapp/blob/develop/docs/accounts.md
Robert
@robertvb
ok, here I have uploaded the issue. gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2280 . Thanks Eric
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
Thanks @robertvb :slight_smile:

The main message textarea is fine
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
@MadLittleMods you're quite welcome. Keep up the good work!

@MadLittleMods
Good catch @lppedd! I created an issue to track this gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2282
Egil Hansen
@egil
Hi gitter folks, are there any plans to do work on the Android client?
And if you are, is there a place where one can contribute with issues and feedback
Edoardo Luppi
@lppedd
@egil good question. I'd also like to contribute (if my skillset permits it) to the Android client.
Mostly because I'm on the phone quite often
Egil Hansen
@egil
Me too. There are clear bugs where new messages doesn't show up unless you kill the app and start it again. It would also be nice to get a notification when you are mentioned if you are subscribed to those.
I would also like to have personal messages grouped somewhere than channels so it's more easy to spot when you get a direct message.
Marc Schwede
@schwedenmut_gitlab
@lppedd and @egil the repo for the gitter android client 👉https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/gitter-android-app
This would be a good place to open issues, fork and create MRs to improve the client.
The readme is quite straightforward with its explanation to get set up and ready.
Edoardo Luppi
@lppedd
@schwedenmut_gitlab thanks!
Marc Schwede
@schwedenmut_gitlab
you are welcome. keep in mind, currently the channel view is realized with a WebView which uses assets from the webapp repository - but you will see in the README.md.
Egil Hansen
@egil
I figured it was @schwedenmut_gitlab
Egil Hansen
@egil
I was more asking to see if there was any active development going on or planes to create native client or at least one that better integrates with the Android platform?
Marc Schwede
@schwedenmut_gitlab
Oh ok, I see. well if i understand https://gitter.im/apps right, main focus of the gitter-team lies on the webapp. but from my experience with the android client, they are very happy about bugfixes/improvements from the community side 😉
@MadLittleMods while the right toolbar state (pinned) persists, the left menu is always expanded after reload/revisiting gitter. What is the wanted behaviour?
I would expect that the toolbar state persists on both sides.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@egil @lppedd There are no plans to work on Android/iOS in the near and pretty far term. It's one of the epics on the roadmap but very far along, https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/gitter/-/epics/6

There is even a slight itch to deprecate them because of those bugs you mention, gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2281. If some of the bigger bugs are fixed that you mentioned, then we can leave them alone. Merge requests welcome!

The notification issue is probably this, gitlab-org/gitter/gitter-android-app#121

:point_up: September 12, 2019 6:47 AM @schwedenmut_gitlab There is an issue to track persisting the pinned state, gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2236. The relevant code should point you in the right direction if you are interested in making a merge request
Egil Hansen
@egil
@MadLittleMods so focus is on the web app? What about turning that into a proper PWA that uses js notification API etc.?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@egil That's the more near term plan :+1: (mentioned in that deprecation issue) -> gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#1992
Egil Hansen
@egil
Roger. I'll look forward to that then. Thanks for an otherwise great service!
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
@MadLittleMods please don't deprecate the Android app! I use it all the time!
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@pdurbin We don't want to stop existing users from using it
