@MadLittleMods
@pdurbin If it's your client joining channels, I don't have any details/knowledge
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Sure, I'm just observing that my IRC client behaves differently with the Gitter IRC bridge than other IRC networks I connect to. Random.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@pdurbin If you are intersested, you can setup your own bridge and debug the code, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Would I be able to connect my own instance of the bridge to Gitter proper or would I have to connect it to my own installation of Gitter?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@pdurbin Connect to gitter.im proper
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
nice

Does anybody beside me use the IRC gateway? It looks like the last conversation in here was in June (a complaint about about being sucked into rooms).

@auscompgeek
nah, we're all just quiet

@MadLittleMods thanks for helping with my weechat problems yesterday. Much appreciated!

Does the gitter irc bridge support support a search for room command? If so, what is it? I am looking for the freenode equivalent of /msg alis list gitter
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
@jwhisnant @MadLittleMods is "LIST: this.listRooms" something different?
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Today I used the Gitter IRC bridge for a one-on-one conversation with one person but it didn't work for another person. Is there any reason for this? It should always "just work", right? I even tried quitting my IRC client (weechat) and reconnecting.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@pdurbin It should work but people have had some issues, gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge#100
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
@MadLittleMods thanks. I could send but not receive.

@wtomed
For the irc bridge, is there a command to retrieve unread messages in a channel?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@wtomed No, here are the commands currently supported https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge/blob/4be376c6d58be55683abec0b099f89d2a653a215/lib/gitter-adapter.js#L56-67

Feel free to create an issue, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge/issues. Do you know of anything similar in IRC already?

Tom Ed White
@wtomed
There is nothing like that I know of in irc. I wasn't sure if you were emulating real irc. I can set up a bouncer.
Some messaging systems with irc interfaces have unread retrieval, for example bitlbee.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@wtomed Sounds like a good case for an issue, link the bitlbee docs for reference
Tom Ed White
@wtomed
Will do.
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@wtomed Thanks for creating the issue, gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge#107
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
@wtomed sounds like a great feature

@auscompgeek
Is the bridge broken right now?
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
I'm having trouble with the Gitter IRC bridge. When I /query username I can type to people but I don't see their replies in IRC. The replies do show up in the Gitter client on Linux (and probably the website). How can I see the replies in IRC? The strange thing is that for some users I can see their replies in IRC but for others I can't. Any insight on this? Thanks!
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods

@pdurbin You can track gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge#100

If you want to dig in, you can run your own instance of the IRC bridge to debug

Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Thanks. What's weird is that a single message came through via IRC. Lots in the Gitter client.

@schwedenmut_gitlab
@MadLittleMods the activity stream in this room is a little bit disarranged. While a merge and approval correctly is routed to GitLab.com, the comments in my last MR are linked to the issues and too github.com. Could this be related to gitlab-org/gitter/webapp#2138 or could this be configuration related to this specific room ?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@schwedenmut_gitlab It's this problem specifically gitlab-org/gitter/services#83

Josh Soref
@jsoref
I was wondering if anyone is familiar w/ gitlab-org/gitter/irc-bridge#52
@pdurbin : if I wanted to try to get this fixed...
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@jsoref Better to ask your question right away instead of asking to ask. What are you wondering about?
Josh Soref
@jsoref
i'd like the bridge to actually show all users instead of just the first 31
the pointer in the ticket is to some code, but i'm not quite sure how that relates to the underlying api (which appears to be windowing instead of continuations, which means it's liable to be fairly broken...)
Josh Soref
@jsoref
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@jsoref As that issue mentions, getting all the users is not the way forward. But we can trickle in any new users that send a message in the chat
Josh Soref
@jsoref
MadLittleMods: what's the argument against all users? that the list is too long?
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@jsoref Yes, some rooms have many many 1000's of people in them
Josh Soref
@jsoref
MadLittleMods: ok, so, something like this might be tolerated? https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/eRspClC6/
Josh Soref
@jsoref
MadLittleMods: something like this? ^
Eric Eastwood
@MadLittleMods
@jsoref Something of the sort but please submit a merge request so we can actually review it
Josh Soref
@jsoref
i'll have to figure out a gitlab account
maybe next week
