alright it doesnt seem that anyone is sharing my opinion so i will shut up about it haha

@umma08

the reason there are so many questions about Beam is perhaps because they have a link to their codebase (i assume that is what the github icon in find us in for) that doesn't actually link anywhere.

The twitter and telegram links do work though, and they also have a contact form. unless of course i am mistaken, and they do have an open codebase.

lehnberg
@lehnberg

@umma08 they say their codebase will be released following the launch of their testnet, which is currently targeted for September.

For what it’s worth, I think that any constructive discussion and knowledge sharing between our projects will be positive, and I agree that there are opportunities for us to learn from each other.

Just like @mfronczyk I too am curious to hear more about the approach @BigRomanov and the Beam team took for their addressing layer, and how they support both online and offline transactions.

umma08
@umma08
@lehnberg yes, but if the codebase was their, i assume people could just look there. the fact that it is not means people have to ask questions
lehnberg
@lehnberg
Indeed. (:
umma08
@umma08
the questions are symptomatic of the opacity level
hokkanen
@hokkanen
what is a grin tx size relative to btc?
Alex Romanov
@BigRomanov
@lehnberg @mfronczyk Yes, we thinkg the addressing layer is important. Even though the address is not part of the transaction and is not recorded in the blockchain there still should be some mechanism to allow wallets to find each other and establish initial connection in a way that allows user to verify the identity of the other wallet . This step is actually a major security issue since it is vulnerable to spoofing and man in the middle attacks. In our opinion, the initial address exchange should occur out of band via a secure channel. This can be done via a centralized secure messaging service, such as Telegram but we are considering implementation of an encrypted decentralized messaging system, for example based on secure distributed hash tables. The system is planned to be built into our walelt. That said, we are still in the process working out the details of the architecture and implementation for this layer.

is there a reason block height on grinscan.net seems to have stalled?
last block 17m ago? is that just variance, or is nobody mining testnet?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
testnet 3 is imminent so there are probably fewer people using t2 now
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
did grin-miner catch up to gold miner?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
there's a meaner-miner plugin that implements the same algorithm now
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
i am considering retrying trying the miner on Google's cloud with P100 GPU's. (didn't work last time)
ok
i'll test again when testnet3 is out
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
slightly, yes. It's just missing the two cuda plugins that now exist
umma08
@umma08
is there some consensus around what would be an effective/efficient hardware setup for grin. is it worthwhile getting a dedicated GPU chip/miner?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
I think at the moment it's more a case of waiting to see what's going on with the next generation of GPUs
And then who knows what will happen ASIC wise... so I don't think anyone can really answer whether getting something is worthwhile. We can only say a 1080ti is the fastest as far as we know
at present, that is
umma08
@umma08
they are pretty pricey. i was thinking of something to play with, that cost about a quarter of the price:-)
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
other cards will work too, they just won't be able to run the fastest solver yet

I have a 1070 and it gives me 400 something ms graph times

Looks like you don’t have cmake installed

@norvegicum
i have installed cmake as an app
im updating HB, trying again, will let you know, thank you.

How can I calculate (an estimate for) the current grin network graph rate? ELI5 please
Is it some_constant * network_difficulty?
John Tromp
@tromp
yes; constant is 42/60
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Please share the constant value. Can I get a better estimate by taking into account the avg rate the last few blocks were found?
Thanks!!
John Tromp
@tromp
but constant will change in testnet3
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Ok, so the 60 is number of seconds? So if the last few blocks were found on avg 50 seconds apart would I use 42/50?
John Tromp
@tromp
yes, 42*diff is graph rate in graphs per block
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Thanks much!
Im also still interested in knowing how much more difficult it is to find a solution at difficulty X vs difficulty Y.
John Tromp
@tromp
X/Y times
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Great! This is math I can understand!
;)
Thanks much!!

Macbook pro 2.2 i7 16gb-ram, Status: running…but cannot see any mining going on..
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
@norvegicum You probably need to be more specific. Note that the grin-miner is a separate project/executable from the grin node itself.
:Norvegicum.
@norvegicum
yes, i noticed. my bad, newbie.
i got the node running, i got the miner compiled, but wont run.
