is there a reason block height on grinscan.net seems to have stalled?
last block 17m ago? is that just variance, or is nobody mining testnet?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
testnet 3 is imminent so there are probably fewer people using t2 now
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
did grin-miner catch up to gold miner?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
there's a meaner-miner plugin that implements the same algorithm now
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
i am considering retrying trying the miner on Google's cloud with P100 GPU's. (didn't work last time)
ok
i'll test again when testnet3 is out
Janus Troelsen
@ysangkok
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
slightly, yes. It's just missing the two cuda plugins that now exist
umma08
@umma08
is there some consensus around what would be an effective/efficient hardware setup for grin. is it worthwhile getting a dedicated GPU chip/miner?
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
I think at the moment it's more a case of waiting to see what's going on with the next generation of GPUs
And then who knows what will happen ASIC wise... so I don't think anyone can really answer whether getting something is worthwhile. We can only say a 1080ti is the fastest as far as we know
at present, that is
umma08
@umma08
they are pretty pricey. i was thinking of something to play with, that cost about a quarter of the price:-)
Yeastplume
@yeastplume
other cards will work too, they just won't be able to run the fastest solver yet

I have a 1070 and it gives me 400 something ms graph times

Looks like you don’t have cmake installed
:Norvegicum.
@norvegicum
i have installed cmake as an app
im updating HB, trying again, will let you know, thank you.

No problem

@bladedoyle
How can I calculate (an estimate for) the current grin network graph rate? ELI5 please
Is it some_constant * network_difficulty?
John Tromp
@tromp
yes; constant is 42/60
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Please share the constant value. Can I get a better estimate by taking into account the avg rate the last few blocks were found?
Thanks!!
John Tromp
@tromp
but constant will change in testnet3
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Ok, so the 60 is number of seconds? So if the last few blocks were found on avg 50 seconds apart would I use 42/50?
John Tromp
@tromp
yes, 42*diff is graph rate in graphs per block
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Thanks much!
Im also still interested in knowing how much more difficult it is to find a solution at difficulty X vs difficulty Y.
John Tromp
@tromp
X/Y times
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Great! This is math I can understand!
;)
Thanks much!!

Macbook pro 2.2 i7 16gb-ram, Status: running…but cannot see any mining going on..
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
@norvegicum You probably need to be more specific. Note that the grin-miner is a separate project/executable from the grin node itself.
:Norvegicum.
@norvegicum
yes, i noticed. my bad, newbie.
i got the node running, i got the miner compiled, but wont run.
Blade Doyle
@bladedoyle
Maybe the discussion here will help mimblewimble/grin-miner#2

@norvegicum

warning: An explicit [[bin]] section is specified in Cargo.toml which currently
disables Cargo from automatically inferring other binary targets.
This inference behavior will change in the Rust 2018 edition and the following
files will be included as a binary target:

  • /Users/Mac/grin-miner/grin-miner/grin/grin-miner/src/bin/types.rs
  • /Users/Mac/grin-miner/grin-miner/grin/grin-miner/src/bin/client.rs
  • /Users/Mac/grin-miner/grin-miner/grin/grin-miner/src/bin/mining.rs
  • /Users/Mac/grin-miner/grin-miner/grin/grin-miner/src/bin/stats.rs
  • /Users/Mac/grin-miner/grin-miner/grin/grin-miner/src/bin/plugin.rs

This is likely to break cargo build or cargo test as these files may not be
ready to be compiled as a binary target today. You can future-proof yourself
and disable this warning by adding autobins = false to your [package]
section. You may also move the files to a location where Cargo would not
automatically infer them to be a target, such as in subfolders.

For more information on this warning you can consult

when it "wont run" is there a stack trace, or other error message?

what happens when you run "grin-miner"?

it just says command not found
