You guys should checkout the configs in share/examples
and then proceed to install them with share/scripts/better-defaults.sh
you do have to run better-defaults.sh from share/scripts though.
Really the important part is installing the .gitconfig and .gitconfig.user and setting .gitconfig.user up with an email that both github and tamu-github have listed
