I find the UI here is cruftier and less pleasant than Slack, but the account and public access models are a much better fit for an open source project (by design)
And we can even go nuts with something like this: https://sidecar.gitter.im

iOS app is obviously just a web view. Not very polished. (And the App Store reviews eviscerate it.)
…and no updates in 11 months. :s
