I won't be able to make it Tuesday, but thought I'd share an interesting article on programming problems:
I'm particularly annoyed that programs don't fail softly when resources run out. Moore's Law notwithstanding - we just demand more of our computers, so we're never really safe from running out of RAM or disk space or CPU cycles or bandwidth.
@growland45 The more annoying thing is when developers throw up their hands, assume resource management is impossible, and move on to other problems without fixing their software. If the program is written properly, and in a language that makes it possible, it's not hard to manage resources properly. Out of disk space is not a problem, the program is still running fine. Out of memory can be avoided by not blindly abusing memory abstractions (garbage collected languages) to the point of contention. Out of CPU cycles should be something that is always happening, otherwise you're wasting money on a CPU that's not being utilized to it's full potential. Assuming it's not being utilized by something stuck in an infinite loop, every cycle means useful work is being done. If you want to do more work, then yeah, you need more CPUs.
