@All - am having issues with only being half logged in - I can't see anyone, nobody can see me and most of the time I see no voxels. I can use chat, and I can apparently (according to the title bar) change domain (but of course they all look the same empty!) My stats read Avatars: 0 Servers: 0 This behaviour has been consistent on all Windows builds over the last week. Any suggestions?
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 16:33
Well the fact that your server count is 0 is definitely related to the problem.
voxels are streamed to your client via the voxel-server (an assignment-client (AC) that is running in voxel-server mode). Avatars are streamed via an avatar-mixer (an AC that is in avatar-mixer mode).
similarly you'd need a audio-mixer in order to speak and be heard.
The question becomes... why can't you connect to any server? Presumably the interface logs would provide some clues.
I don't know the common problems or their solutions, but I wonder if the servers are having trouble connecting through your firewall.
@birarda might have some ideas or actual suggestions on things to look for in the logs.
Ryan Huffman
@huffman
Jul 25 2014 16:36
I've had issues with connecting to servers before that were fixed by deleting (effectively resetting) my configuration file. This was on OS X, so I'm not sure where it is located on Windows.
I had sent my configuration + logs to @birarda when it happened (month ago?), not sure if the problem was determined.

@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 16:42
@AndrewMeadows Ah interesting - assignment clients can be run in different modes to be audio / avatar / voxel servers - that's going to help next time I'm picking through the code! Ok, so firewall issues: I just tried turning off Windows firewall and the firewall in my router, no change.
@huffman I've already searched for the ini file on Windows, I can't seem to find it anywhere. Logs I have lots of and can share!

Jul 25 2014 16:49
I keep seeing a chat message come up in my sys tray about streaming via Skype - where's that coming from lol? I don't think it's gitter (they don't show here), and the messages don't show in Interface either - am a little confused as to how to read these messages - where can I read them properly?
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 16:49
Well, don't post the logs here. Put them up in a pastebin.com page or something.
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 16:52
@AndrewMeadows sure - last 4 log files : http://davedub.co.uk/downloads/hf/Logs.rar
have just been told where ini file is - will try resetting...
AndrewMeadows @AndrewMeadows reads the man page on 'unrar'
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:06
just unrar filename
it are 4 files with relatively the same name, so if it doesnt create a folder, you'll find them back pretty quick
cat hifi-log*

ah - sry guys, didn't think about mac / linux unraring - I guess use zip next time? What works best for you guys?
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:09
tar.gz ? lol
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:09
unrar works fine. I just had never used it before so I wasn't familiar with the command options.

@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:09
np - 7zip will make those if I remember rightly...
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:09
tar is best for *nix I think
Jason Hawks
@nbq
Jul 25 2014 17:10
lol yes, there is a method for mac and linux for rar, 7z, tar.gz, tar, zip, etc etc
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:10
tar sounds best then - noted
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:11
well, I looked at the last log. it appears you were tying to connet to kevintown.net for domain server. Is that correct?
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:11
he did
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:12
is kevintown.net actually running a domain server (DS)?
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:12
it is
we were there with 3 when he tried to come
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:13
well it seems like the logs are not helpful. Something is going wrong but it isn't getting logged
This log: "Clearing the NodeList. Deleting all nodes in list." means (I think) that all network connections are being cleared.
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:14
bugger. I have some new logs I just got from the new 917 build - could they help?
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:14
The NodeList is the list of servers (their IP info and type)
so if you're talking to the DS then there will be a Node in the NodeList that corresponds to it.
So, someone needs to dig into the spot of the code where the Nodes get retired from the NodeList and add some logs that state why each Node was dropped.... perhaps.
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:16
That would be helpful
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:17
I notice that the "Clearing the NodeList" log happens every... 5 seconds, which I think is the timeout.
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:17
ah - ok, I had noticed all the nodelist clearing log entries...
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:17
If you do that, you can clearly see if you're moving to a different domain, or if its reconnecting for what reason ever
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:17
right, this IS something I can look at tomorrow (it's gone midnight here!)
could you point me in the direction of the project file I'd be looking for? I guess it's in the DS code right?
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:19
I think the connect sequence works like this (this is what I remember from what I've been told or overheard):
the interface connects to the STUN server which is a server out in the open
as per this log: "New public socket received from STUN server is 1.10.221.50:30161"
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:20
ok...
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:20
The STUN server is supposed to help the interface connect to the various other servers (the DS and assorted AC's)
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:21
right - justfiring up Visual Studio to have a look...
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:22
it sends two packets simultaneously: one to your interface client saying basically: "talk to the DS on this IP:port" and one to the DS saying "talk to this new interface on that IP:port"
the incoming port on your router isn't open yet
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:23
ok, so the log entry you mentioned is in the processSTUNResponse, so we know I'm connecting to the STUN server. The error comes when one of a number of conditions fail. So I guess I could modify the log entry to say at least which condition has failed.
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:23
but the DS and interface send packets to each other at the same time, which opens the port through the router
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:24
you could use qDebug() << "the value I wanna read"<< your_value; to trace it
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:25
sorry, I don't understand that - how does the duplexing of messages open a port?
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:25
whoever is running kevintown.net could, in theory check the logs of the DS to see if it gets a message from the STUN server predicting your arrival, and whether it ever gets a message from your interface client
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:25
Dave holdon, I'll look what thoys.nl says when you try to connect
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:26
I'm not entirely sure how the STUN connection works @DaveDubUK. @birarda could explain.
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:26
cool - thx Thoys - alt-tabbing over...
Andrew Meadows
@AndrewMeadows
Jul 25 2014 17:27
but, the STUN server's purpose is to help client connect to servers through NAT.
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:30
right - just out of interest, where is the STUN server? Is it part of HF's global services?
Thijs Wenker
@thoys
Jul 25 2014 17:31
@AndrewMeadows he tried to connect to me, but neither the domain-server or assignment clients show something in console
apart from the save routines
Davedub
@DaveDubUK
Jul 25 2014 17:31
would you like to se my log?

It should be the same as the other logs
Davedub

Hello @TimelessP. I'm using linux. It works fine for me (kubutn) except the Faceshift software doesn't run on linux so whenever I need to use it for a meeting or demo I have to reboot to Mac. You probably don't have Faceshift so nothing to worry about.
btw, Alynna's guide is now out of date. We added two dependencies very recently: libssl-dev and libhidapi-dev
er... kubuntu

I finished and got it running.
Annoying menu asking all time me to login, of course. I will setup my server soon.
For now I will get familiarized with what I have, to see if I can help.
I hope animations/grafics/controls my Xbox controller have some issues when I plug in a 11year old plataform. I hope I get much better than its antecessor.
Point me in some direction. Maybe someday I to be able to help.
