Hmmm.... @thoys I still don't understand. I think the USB connector on the Oculus is for peripherals, not for another screen.

hey all, could someone comment on how HF will handle in-world text display? Is there a way to write 'Hello world' on a face of a voxel(s)?
What I want to do is display a text file (specifically a Java file) on a wall of voxels if that helps for context

@anthonye2007 you could ‘carve’ the text into the voxels, but that’s the only way for now

@problem ok, so that would be creating a voxel wall and then removing voxels to create the text?

@anthonye2007 that’s one way to do it — you could also write a script that did it, but that would be new territory as I don’t think it’s yet be done

sure, I could create a script, I was just looking to see if there were easy ways :)

gotcha, nope, none yet :P
oh, you could also bake it into a mesh
and upload an FBX file

@problem would it be worthwhile for me to look into creating something where a small screen/wall could display text or announcements?
As in, do you guys have something in mind that you plan to create later?
I don't want to spend time on something that is just for me and wouldn't help other people ;)

yeah, i think that’d be awesome. eventually we will do something like this, maybe even support displaying HTML as a sort of texture on objects so you can do this really easily, but we haven’t sorted much of this out yet
how were you thinking you’d go about it?

hmm, on worklist I see something called a text overlay
could you talk about that? Or is that way different?
I'd have to look at the code, I haven't done that yet so I don't know what I'd do for implementation at this point... But from a design point, being able to have something like a display board would be really nice. I'll take a look around the code.

A text overlay is something we do via JavaScript. So, if you are OK with it being displayed in 2D ontop of the 3D view, then that’s definitely the easiest route

Keep in mind that text overlays are only local overlays though.

Ah yes @PhilipRosedale , but i ment, it might need less wires when they use the new standart

@Atlante45 @problem is a text overlay what the Stats tool is using? Where it shows FPS, ping, velocity etc

that’s not a JS overlay but it would effectively look the same @anthonye2007

@anthonye2007 you can find JS overlays when you run the javascripts, like editvoxels.js

@anthonye2007 What we will do for in-world text that everyone can see is define a kind of entity (right now entities are only model FBX files or spheres or Cubes) that has meta data for the text and font, etc, and renders as such. This is something that someone could take on as a dev project if they wanted.
