Oh... the face tracking program is not free open-source? That sucks :(
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:06
nope its extremely expensive membership based

Hope it won't be the same with the physics engine BTW. Second Life insisted on staying with Havok, which lead to a separation between Opensim viewers and Main Grid viewers. I hope Hifi will use one like BulletX or ODE.
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:07
yeah bullet would be best

Any decision or discussion on that? It is a bit worrying if there will be closed source plugins in an open project like this... more than strictly necessary at least
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:09
yeah mixamo isnt open source either but good luck finding any facial animation or autorigging software that is
at least mixamo uses a cheap steam app though
Mircea Kitsune

Nov 28 2014 01:09
Makes sense. Some things don't have open implementations yet unfortunately
Then again, I don't think face tracking hardware is found in general computer shops either. Mostly just for animation studios
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:10
yeah. facerig can do it form yoru webcam, dont need a depth camera
its cheap on steam too

Nov 28 2014 01:12
ill be damned if im paying $800 a year for faceshift though.
you would never make your money back if you sold avatars
and people who make their own avatar arent going to do it either
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:13
Oh... you're one of the project admins? Or is Faceshift a separate program, not compiled with Hifi?
*Hifi admins
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:13
im not a project admin, but i am a 3d modeller/animator
hifi is using faceshift facial animation standard
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:14
Nice. I model and animate with Blender too
I see

Nov 28 2014 01:19
BTW, was wondering something else: Since Hifi (thankfully) uses voxels instead of primitives and objects: Can you still make objects that you can texture freely, script, and take as inventory items which you can also attach to your avatar... as in SL? Or are voxel contraptions only possible to rez in the world
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:19
Yeah I believe you can
I havent tried it yet though
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:21
Nice
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:21
you can sculpt voxels too
with you rhands if you have leap motion

@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:22
I'm really eager to see a demonstration of how you build stuff. I'm curious how you texture voxels, and most of all how you separate square faces from round ones, and how you set each voxel to merge and rounden (I assume marching cubes exists). Like sphere vs cylinder vs cube
Cool

@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:23
Any screenshots or videos about what I'm asking as well? Just very curious, now that I think better about it
This is something I've dreamed of since I saw Minecraft: A world similar to SL, where you have the same building capabilities, but everything out of voxels. Can't believe it's coming true now :D

are you in alpha?
i think there might be videos on youtube

Nov 28 2014 01:25
I checked out the GIT repository, but can't compile it since there's a problem with my qt5 packages or something.
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:25
you can download it without compiling
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:25
Ok. I only know of those on hifi's channel
Oh? Where from?
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:25
shoudl be a link in your alpha email
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:26
I didn't find a download page from their website
Ah. Hmm... not sure if I got such an email
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax

check your spam
if you got added to alpha you shoul dhave gotten an email

It works on Linux & with free video drivers right (Mesa / Gallium, for ATI 6xxx cards)
ok
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:27
it should yeah, i run my domain server off ubuntu

you can ask them to approve you
i messaged chris collins and he approved me

@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:39
Also, I heard interesting things about how the world is stored. Is the concept of simulators and regions gone, and is the world a whole and seamless entity now?
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:39
its infinite sims on each server
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:39
Someone / some page said that any server can host any voxel contraptions anywhere. Which is very awesome and practical if it's the case
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:39
limited only by hardware
each "sim" is infinite too
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:40
Cool. But locations aren't aucomatically separated by server, with region crossing and all that
Like, there's only one location
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:41
well each domiain is infinite but apparently they can be connected together somehow
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:42
Would be nice if each "region" could be delimited as a cube, not as a 2D square of a fixed dimension... as it's currently the case in SL. Or even better, each server hosts any object at any location, so there aren't really server-separated areas. Any 3D spot can belong to one or more servers at once
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:43
oh they are
but i havent read anything about parcels
i mean they are 3d cubes
not sure how its goign to handle the rest of that
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:44
yep. Parcels in this case might be best left out. Though setting access to various areas will of course be important
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:44
i think it woul dbe cool to have say an apartment building with 3d parcels
so you dont automatically own the sky
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:45
yeah. Objects could define their own interior as a parcel though
To exemplify as SL, it would be like razzing a cube, setting it to hollow, then setting parcel properties to anything inside its radius.
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:46
yeah that would be cool
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:57
Well... my last concern was about avatars. SL has a drawback: The avatar mesh / skeletal rig / animations are hard coded. The only thing you can do now in comparison to the past, is attaching a skeletal mesh to your avatar... but you still can't have custom animation bones and original animations. Will avatars in Hifi be fully customizable, including possible to build in-world?
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:57
yes
i dont know abou tbuilding in-world though
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 01:58
ok. That's good enough to know
Hopefully we can now make NPC's that look like players and avatars. In SL it's not possible to have a self-animated model, so you can make non-avatar characters that properly move and walk.
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 01:59
my problem with sl was you couldnt have your sl avatars skin on a mesh
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 02:00
That too. Somewhat understandable since any mesh can use any UV mapping
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 02:01
i was able to make a custom avatar model with UV matching the sl avatars
i even figured out how to use their own skin on it, but there was no way to update it to new viewers entering the area
all they would see is gray
i would like to see hifi characters be able to switch skin textures, since they are suing mixamo texture standard
*using
uv maps, even
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 02:04
I was mostly upset that you can't use the buildin clothing system with mesh avatars.
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 02:04
well you could but they wouldnt match unless the mesh matched the sl avatar, which sucks
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 02:05
yeah. Would be cool if it detected the mesh avatar and generated the cloth on top of that
Mircea Kitsune
@MirceaKitsune
Nov 28 2014 02:31
I wonder if Hifi still uses Windlight for the sky system. That's like one of the best things in SL
CrackerHax
@CrackerHax
Nov 28 2014 15:46
it would be good if we could aim multiple domain names at a single domain, like how internet domain names work
