what's in domain data now will define the connection to a stack server instance and its UUID - a location will point to that
in other words - a domain is like having an IP address and a place is like buying a DNS name to point to that IP.

so nobody will ever see domains or can they type in a domain to get there?
what about when a domain is the same as somebody elses place name?

the names assigned to domains will be going away - it's confusing, but, it's always been known the names would eventually cost. What they're doing, in my own words - not theirs - is divorcing the name from the server instance so it can be bought as a placename - while still leaving the ability to have a sim space (domain) defined you can reach without paying by passing its IP in the address bar. They kinda went wrong with their terminology - but it's too late to fix now. Domains should have been something like an instance or server_config, place name should have ended up as domain and place name would have been a location within a domain.
once the changeover is complete the domain info page will no longer contain a name field - it'll contain the UUID for the domain instance then can be attached to a place name (or not).

you can type in a regular domain name and it will work, I have a domain called adriania on my home box but the url is adriania.ddns.net, and I can get there using both names

I also started a domain on a hosted droplet and assigned adriania.com
so I could go to adriania at home or adriania.com to the remote

too many cross terms, makes head spin lol - domain as in HiFi domain will become nameless but you could get to one by a DNS domain name.

both are totally different and not mutually exclusive

and that'll work for most - apparently you won't be easily findable without a place name which could be considered a plus for some of us.

yes when search comes in it will use the paid location names only
Joe Large [Omega Heron]
@OmegaHeron
Jan 10 2015 04:28
yup
and other than when and how much, none of this was unexpected. They've always said the full on participation in the directories and searchables would come at a cost.
the only fault I have with the entire process was making it sound as confusing as humanly possible. :P

@Adrianl3d - one bit of good news. When it makes sense to start building linux server side stuff with bulletsim - it will be easy to add.
I'm holding off on updating my build info until sure they're sticking with the setup I worked out.

yeah looking forward to that
I will need to talk to you about updating
I grabbed about 7 paid names for future investment, I agree 4-5 years

Hey, I got a little problem with the stack manager. I can't connect to it via hifi:// but localhost works. Console of stack manager gets spammed with this text:
Received a request for assignment type 7 from 127.0.0.1:63139
[DEBUG] [01/10 02:15:27] Unable to fulfill assignment request of type 7 from 127.0.0.1:63139

@AndrewMeadows @PhilipRosedale Windows 7.1 64 bit - Interface 1727 - assignment/domain running on Linux at level of #4800 closure. Delete entity, Interface crashes but entity is deleted. Attempted same with 2nd domain running on OS X - saw entity server crash and entity attempting to delete return, but, not sure the OS X AC/DS was up to this build level - will try again in a bit.

and next issue. With 1726 move to location hoo - turn 360 degrees then attempt to move - all good. Don't turn, just start moving - all good. Build 1727 move to location hoo - any attempt to move forward/backward Interface freezes but can rotate using left/right fine.

@OmegaHeron Yes I see this problem as well, investigating, thx. We are trying to fix some complex problems related to moving entities, which was also related to the crashing that was deleting content. Working on it.
