The overlays can measure the text, but the text entity can't. However the text entity is clever enough to wrap the text to the given size. But it doesn't have any control over the margins. It has fixed size margins that are 0.1 * lineHeight.
TextRenderer3D uses Font, which measures and renders text. It does line wrapping in Font::rebuildVertices. We'd have to factor out some of that code to just measure the text against the size of the rectangle you want to wrap to, and adjust for the margins up in RenderableTextEntityItem, which is the part of the code that knows about the margins it uses:

@SimHacker
There is also a difference between the way billboardable overlay's "isFacingAvatar" works, and text entity's faceCamera works: billboardables turn towards the camera with yaw and pitch, but text entities only turn with yaw (and don't tilt up or down towards the camera like overlays to).
It would be nice to be able to define margins for text entities instead of having 0.1 * lineHeight fixed.
And it would be nice to have finer (and more consistent) control over how billboarding works. You might even want to roll the text to match the camera so it's easy to read when you roll your head in VR. Since the point of billboarding is to make text readable, that will help, so you don't end up looking at slanted, sideways or upside down text (if you hang upside down in vr from a jungle gym or something like that ;)
So you could specify which of the 3 axis you wanted to rotate.

@SimHacker
I just wrote up a job proposal for "Fixes and extensions for text entities, text3d overlays and text overlays":
https://worklist.net/21323
Open to suggestions about which combinations and orders of rotation axes are useful and practical for billboarding, and what a good API for specifying those are (an enum? three bools?)
Seth Alves
@sethalves
I haven't read your proposal, but I should mention that there are some features of overlays that are still in there but no longer make sense now that overlays can be parents or children of other things
nevermind -- I read billboarding and thought "panel". this probably doesn't relate to what you're proposing.
Seth Alves
@sethalves
@SimHacker did you have questions that I might be able to answer?

@Triplelexx
hey all, there's a worklist job for "Add a scale slider for avatar size". It states "The value range should be not be given in exact scale multiples because domains can set their own min/max". I'm unsure how one could query such information from the current domain.

@Triplelexx
_domainMaximumScale, ok

For @themelissabrown or for anyone else that might know, but the Shortbow that is available on the Marketplace, is that the same one that is in /unpublishedScripts/marketplace/shortbow - in regards to WL-21458?
Melissa Brown
@themelissabrown
should be one and the same
Laszlo Fazekas
@TheBojda
hi! What is the license of worklist? I've found the source code on github, but can I use it in my project? Ty
Flame Soulis
@FlameSoulis
I do apologize for the bother, but are comments on Worklist just not working? I get the emails when they are posted, but when it comes to viewing them, I have been unsuccessful.
MiladNazeri
@MiladNazeri
@FlameSoulis is there a particular Worklist # in question?
Melissa Brown
@themelissabrown
So you have to be signed out to see the comments?
Flame Soulis
@FlameSoulis
@MiladNazeri 21563, and @themelissabrown yes. I just checked on that
Melissa Brown
@themelissabrown
We've had that happen off and on- it's almost always tied to github and not WL but we haven't tracked down why
Flame Soulis
@FlameSoulis
ah, okay, well I can keep up with that quirk then
Melissa Brown
@themelissabrown
I'll open a bug on it. Sorry.
if you disconnect and re-auth worklist sometimes that helps.
MiladNazeri
@MiladNazeri
@FlameSoulis, Question, what do you see when you go to https://worklist.net/21563
MiladNazeri
@MiladNazeri
Interesting, that is helpful, thank you for sharing
Flame Soulis
@FlameSoulis
of course
Melissa Brown
@themelissabrown
@MiladNazeri It always happens around github outtages, and then in other circumstances that we can't pinpoint. Austin had an issue with it a few weeks ago.

I cant seem to find the older versions of the LeapDeveloperKit, oldest I can find is 2.3.1, and it does not contain the lipLeap.dylib
David Rowe
@ctrlaltdavid
2.3.1 is the correct version, i.e., the one that High Fidelity is built with. (See the version of the Leap.dll included in the install directory.)
High Fidelity really should be updated to use the later Orion SDK sometime as it has a greater hand tracking range.

Hi all! I've logged in as a new dev on worklist. My W9 has been approved, but I still can't place bids. Is there something else I need to do?
The popup on placing a bid mentioned validating PayPal -- I entered my PayPal email, but don't see any way to start a validation process...
Also, I can't see comments when I'm logged in. I opened a job for it, but sounds like you guys are already aware of it from above comments...

seems "hifi-docs" project is broken (dead link). it mentioned readme.io, and I believe we use grav and another repo now? can/should this be updated? can i help with this?

@themelissabrown
Let me check with Nimisha but I think it's intentional that it isn't open right now

Recently worklist has been going down for me quite a bit
Is it just me or it goes down for others as well where you keep refreshing the page just to see a blank white page :/
David Rowe
@ctrlaltdavid
I had once instance for a short while yesterday, but there were a handful of other Web sites that I also couldn't reach (while other sites continued to work fine). It was an Internet routing glitch somewhere in the country network. I worked around it be VPN-ing into another city.
Mohammed Nafees
@mnafees
It's been happening on my work laptop and my home station as well, for quite long periods of time
