@ianyh
@dustinlacewell-wk there is some oddly hard-coded behavior with the commands for spaces that you might be running into. Are you able to modify them via the Preferences window?
Ian
@ianfixes
Thanks. I took care of most of them and now I'm going to see about that delegate pattern.
Ian
@ianfixes
@ianyh I appreciate your nit-picking a great deal because it's improving the quality of my contributions here :)
Ian
@ianfixes
@ianyh If I was going to define a global constant for CGWindowId(0) (context: this PR comment), should it go in Silica and/or Amethyst? And if so, where? Needs to be accessible from WindowManager, SIWindow+Amethyst, and one of the layouts.
Tim Uckun
@timuckun
Hi. I downloaded and tried Amethyst today and have a couple of questions
  1. Is there a way to make it more clear which window has focus now? The mac doesn't have a stark highlight on the focused window IMHO
  1. Is there a way to "focus" on a window by centering it on the screen but not making it full screen. Ideally I would like to bring it to center and then send it back to where it was.
  1. Is there a way to disable it without quitting entirely.
Thanks.

@Felix-Petersen
@timuckun "3. Is there a way to disable it without quitting entirely." Yes, use the Floating mode
Ian
@ianfixes
@timuckun can you describe what you're going for with the "centering it on the screen but not making it full screen"? This sounds an awful lot like just dragging a window so that it overlaps other windows, which doesn't make sense in a tiling window manager...
ranmacar
@ranmacar
Hello! Somehow my keyboard shortcuts got wiped, probably when enabling crash reporting (deselects all other options?)
Is there a simple way to reimport them?
Erik Nelson
@erikthered
Can someone explain how "float small windows" works? Most dialog boxes that popup from my apps are not getting set to float automatically (IntelliJ in this particular case). Does the list below that checkbox in preferences cause all windows for that app to get floated or is that controlling which apps the "float small windows" setting gets applied to?

@manveru
Anyone here using emacs? I can't get it to tile at all...
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
You mean not in a terminal?
Ian
@ianfixes
some GNU-based apps (Gimp, on my machine) haven't immediately tiled for me. I'm not the person to talk to on why this happens though
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
@manveru I just brew installed emacs 25.3 and it tiles okay.

@jez

I frequently use apps where I'd like the app to only take up half the screen, even if it's the only window open.

One thing I do to work around this is open up a new Finder window just to take up space.
The downside is that sometimes I fat finger a key on a Finder window and delete files :confounded:

I see that there are some blank windows in the screenshot at the top of the README. Those would work fine!
Does anyone else have ways that they work around making windows take up less space in Amethyst?

Jake Zimmerman
@jez
Ah, I got nerd sniped and wrote the app I was looking for:

As a quick FYI, I am alive and I will be coming back to Amethyst (hopefully soon). I have been very busy and in very poor health recently.
Ian
@ianfixes
Don't rush it on our account; your health comes first! Hope you feel better
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@timuckun it seems like people have answered (3), and I think I agree with @ifreecarve on (2). As for (1) there is not currently a way to do it, but it's been on the list for a long time. See ianyh/Amethyst#127
@erikthered that is a complicated question. The heuristic right now boils down to automatically float the window if (1) it is a window that (2) is smaller than some hard coded size. Dialogs are already ignored. The size thing was a rough solution I made like 4 years ago and hasn't really changed since.
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@manveru Referring to @ifreecarve's comment about GNU-based apps it is correct that Amethyst can't handle windows draw using X11 as they are not exposed to the Accessibility API. Depending on how you are running emacs it may or may not work.
I think I've caught up on messages here. If something hasn't been addressed let me know.

Hi! I'm trying to figure out if Amethyst works for what I need. It's actually a very basic need. I just want app windows to remember their previous position. What happens is that I normally open Alacritty (terminal), it starts out in the middle of the screen. I move it to the right edge. Then I close it/restart the computer, and when I open it again, it's back in the middle of the screen. Would Amethyst save the position? Of course it seems like a bazooka to kill an ant, but if it does the job, I'm sure I'll find other features useful as well. Thanks!
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
@kbdluv It doesn't really make them remember. It automatically positions and sizes windows into a particular pattern on the screen.
Jake Zimmerman
@jez
@kbdluv but that being said, you can have amethyst open on launch. So if you restart, Amethyst will auto-launch, and when it launches it will tile any already open windows, and then also tile any windows you open after.
So if you only want Alacritty to take up half the screen, you'll need an extra filler window open (which is a problem I ran into, and so I created https://github.com/jez/spacer to just take up space). Set Alacritty, Spacer, and Amethyst to open at login, and everything will line up no questions asked.

@bitwiseman @jez thank you for the help!

I'm finding myself already really missing the window peeking.
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@ifreecarve I don't know if I changed something, but the mouse resize behavior seems to not be working.
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
Figured it out. In resolving conflicts in the preferences window I lost the preference to enable it.
Ian
@ianfixes
ok whew :) Am I the one that killed window peeking?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
Yeah. It caused that flickering when mouse tracking was introduced.
Ian
@ianfixes
can you record a gif of it happening?
Woffenden
@mwoffenden
@ianyh - Window resizing (0.12.0b) is working very well and very pleasantly surprised to see this addition. Takes tiling to a whole new level! Question though .. it only resizes horizontally ... is this by design?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
You really have @ifreecarve to thank for it. The resizing only works in the resizable dimension; i.e., it can only do what the shortcuts can do. The wide layout, for example, would only support the vertical dimension.
Woffenden
@mwoffenden
@ifreecarve Great job on the resizing, I had been hoping to see such a feature ever since using Plumb on Windows. Hey @ianyh, is suspend/resume coming to a beta near me?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
That’ll be in the next version.
Ian
@ianfixes
Thanks @mwoffenden! I'm hoping to one day see the same resize-every-dimension functionality that I enjoy in AwesomeWM on my linux laptop, but that's many months and a sophisticated data structure away from where we are now
Woffenden
@mwoffenden
Sounds good @ifreecarve but the resizing right now is still super amazing and really makes the product seem all-new again. BTW I see the new "peek" feature in today's release notes. But how does that work?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
When a window is focused, but is too large to fit into its assigned frame we shift the window out of its frame to show it entirely.
Ian
@ianfixes
@ianyh did you open an issue for the swap/overlap problem mentioned in #685 or did you want me to?
Ian
@ianfixes
Noticing another bug where changing window focus with peeking enabled causes the windows to swap, no dragging requried
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
I have filed an issue. Could you open one?
Sorry, I haven’t filed one. Typing on a phone.
Ian
@ianfixes
I will open issues. I think there might be a race condition with window peeking causing move events, which trigger swaps. Still looking into it.
Ian
@ianfixes
#689 and #690 added, there should be enough info in there to identify & fix the behavior. Not sure what solution to use though.
