@nextl00p
hello! amethyst is not in mac ports isn't it?
conancarrow
@conancarrow
Hi! I'm having trouble getting Amethyst to recognize zathura windows. If I open a pdf with zathura book.pdf & the window that's opened just doesn't tile. Does anyone know a workaround?
andrea_denisse.go
@da-edra
Thanks a lot Liam!
vvnlee
@vvnlee
Hello, I was wondering if amethyst collects any information from the user and handles any information?
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
@vvnlee Could you be a bit more specific?
vvnlee
@vvnlee
Sorry, I'm part of my company's compliance team and I have a user who wants to user Amethyst. I was wondering if Amethyst collects any information from the user who downloads; or if it handles any data from the user. I downloaded the app and I didn't notice any EULA
I'm mostly concerned about data and privacy
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
So, the code is open of course: https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst
I don’t see any setting for collecting usage data.
vvnlee
@vvnlee
I'm sorry, I don't mean a setting within Amethyst, but I mean does the application collect any data from the user and send it back to the devs at Amethyst for example ?
Such as, is there a privacy policy ?
Ian
@ianfixes

@mrkskk

can i [copy an existing layout] in the UI?

No, sorry... I meant in the codebase it might be straightforward -- it's not something you can accomplish from the UI

I'm not the project author, but in all my contributions to this project (and Silica, which it's built on) I never ran across anything that looked like it sent data back to the author. If you need a privacy policy document to exist in the app/repo, it might be best to open an issue to track that.

@avatar-lavventura
I was wondering is there any way to use Amethyst only for a single program like (Mail) or only on a single Deskton N?
vvnlee
@vvnlee
@ianfixes Thank you so much!
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
Oh man, I missed a lot.
@vvnlee Amethyst does not capture user data.
There isn't an explicit privacy policy, but I can add one.
@avatar-lavventura you can do the first thing by using a tiling whitelist. In the Floating preferences pane set it to float applications except listed and then set whatever applications you want to use with Amethyst.
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
The second thing can kind of be supported.
You can use the floating layout on everything but desktop N.
@conancarrow zathura on mac seems to use xquartz ianyh/Amethyst#196
It's not supported.
@nextl00p I have not put it on macports.
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
To be fair, though, I also don't maintain the homebrew formula.
Someone might have done it.
Gonçalo
@GoncaloGarcia
Hi! Is there a way I can resize vertically?
Lets say I have one window on half of the screen horizontally and two stacked windows on the other side
I'd like to make the top window smaller and the bottom window larger
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
Not currently supported.
Ian
@ianfixes
Gonçalo, support for this really depends on 2 features that don't exist yet (only one of which is even being tracked).
  1. An ability to see what layout parameters are in effect, #970 (as it's confused plenty of people already, myself included, despite the layouts having only 2 adjustable parameters)
  2. An ability to track more than just the "main pane" proportion when scaling windows. I'm not sure of an appropriate data structure to do this, although I know AwesomeWM has this feature and might be a good place to look for guidance.

@Thutm
@ianyh great work on Amethyst, extremely helpful for me. Appreciate the effort you put into it.
Made a contribution to girls who code in your name. :thumbsup:

@arwineap
Is there a way to get 3 columns on bsp?
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
The other thing I would love is the ability to import / export "window title restrictions" under floating - Could share the intellij configs around with my team, or copy them over to goland, pycharm, etc
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
@arwineap appears the code has a configuration file capability, not sure if its documented somewhere though https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst/blob/4cea3a48a1cc5444130f5ea385434d4f7d59ce4d/Amethyst/Preferences/UserConfiguration.swift#L273-L288 basically it looks like you could store settings in ~/.amethyst and then just share your dot files like normal
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
Hrm, and this appears to be the default settings, which may be the same format
https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst/blob/4cea3a48a1cc5444130f5ea385434d4f7d59ce4d/Amethyst/default.amethyst
Thanks!
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
I got bsp to 3 column, but I've no idea how it happened... It's possible!
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
Well even in the column views, it appears default behavior is to split axis in non primary panes as you bring up new windows. I generally run column or 3 column and throw my smaller windows into a single pane and it splits them all for me horizontally.
Not sure if that’s what your observing?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@Thutm thanks!
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
The dotfile was the original configuration method before there was a UI for it. It's been pseudo-deprecated for a while, but there's been enough interest in it that I'm thinking about making it a first class mechanism again.
Probably yaml instead of json, though.
Though will have to be backwards compatible with existing dotfiles.
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
That would be useful. I know personally, I backup my dotfiles into a git repo so it would be nice to backup config for this as well. Although to be fair, I don’t know how much customization I have even really done to it. Kind of works out of the box for me the way I need it to.
realfunkyusername
@realfunkyusername
I am new to the usage of a window tiling manager so I was wondering if I got the basic concept wrong: Is it not possible to have like 5 windows open and only split the space between 3 of them? I would like to alt+tab to the other two windows when I need them because I only need them once or twice an hour (e.g. slack)
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
@haneatic The other windows should go in separate “Spaces”. Instead of alt-tabbing to them you switch to their spaces.
mozaman
@mozaman
Anyone know where to configure padding?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@mozaman if you open tbe preferences window (click the icon in the status bar) there are options there.
Will Sheldon
@willsheldon
Hi folks :) Amethyst is awesome! I was wondering if there is any functionality (planned or otherwise) to allow for fixing / static / locking windows? I have three or four apps I'd like to make stick to the same location on the screen. I tried a google, but I'm not sure what this feature would be called..
