Is there a way to get 3 columns on bsp?
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
The other thing I would love is the ability to import / export "window title restrictions" under floating - Could share the intellij configs around with my team, or copy them over to goland, pycharm, etc
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
@arwineap appears the code has a configuration file capability, not sure if its documented somewhere though https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst/blob/4cea3a48a1cc5444130f5ea385434d4f7d59ce4d/Amethyst/Preferences/UserConfiguration.swift#L273-L288 basically it looks like you could store settings in ~/.amethyst and then just share your dot files like normal
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
Hrm, and this appears to be the default settings, which may be the same format
https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst/blob/4cea3a48a1cc5444130f5ea385434d4f7d59ce4d/Amethyst/default.amethyst
Thanks!
Alex Arwine
@arwineap
I got bsp to 3 column, but I've no idea how it happened... It's possible!
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
Well even in the column views, it appears default behavior is to split axis in non primary panes as you bring up new windows. I generally run column or 3 column and throw my smaller windows into a single pane and it splits them all for me horizontally.
Not sure if that’s what your observing?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@Thutm thanks!

The dotfile was the original configuration method before there was a UI for it. It's been pseudo-deprecated for a while, but there's been enough interest in it that I'm thinking about making it a first class mechanism again.
Probably yaml instead of json, though.
Though will have to be backwards compatible with existing dotfiles.
Joseph Campos
@Thutm
That would be useful. I know personally, I backup my dotfiles into a git repo so it would be nice to backup config for this as well. Although to be fair, I don’t know how much customization I have even really done to it. Kind of works out of the box for me the way I need it to.

I am new to the usage of a window tiling manager so I was wondering if I got the basic concept wrong: Is it not possible to have like 5 windows open and only split the space between 3 of them? I would like to alt+tab to the other two windows when I need them because I only need them once or twice an hour (e.g. slack)
Liam Newman
@bitwiseman
@haneatic The other windows should go in separate “Spaces”. Instead of alt-tabbing to them you switch to their spaces.
mozaman
@mozaman
Anyone know where to configure padding?
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
@mozaman if you open tbe preferences window (click the icon in the status bar) there are options there.

Hi folks :) Amethyst is awesome! I was wondering if there is any functionality (planned or otherwise) to allow for fixing / static / locking windows? I have three or four apps I'd like to make stick to the same location on the screen. I tried a google, but I'm not sure what this feature would be called..
Daniel Rodríguez Alcalá
@danielhra
Hello everyone! loving amethyst so far, i was wondering if there was any way to make windows that are opened by an application to float instead of tile, for instance inside intellij i would like all pop ups to float rather than tile, cheers!
Ian
@ianfixes
There's a section in the preferences called "floating" that should help with this, but I believe it only works by matching window titles
Patrick Steil
@pmsteil
Hello! I installed Amethyst yesterday and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It works fantastic on my 27" iMac and helps me keep my sanity! I have 10-12 Spaces (screens) in use at any time... and so many windows open that I lose track of everything. Now with the 3 Column Middle and hotkeys setup just right THIS IS AMAZING!!!!
Would like to put in my vote for saving of configs in a dot file for easy re-install on my next M1 when I get it next year :)

@MagneticDuck
hi all. first-time Mac user, and happy that Amethyst exists to save me from the horror of floating windows
here to inquire about a feature. is there a way to make Amethyst automatically set certain kinds of windows to "floating mode" when they spawn?
thanks. EDIT: figured out how to do this. in the Amethyst configuration dialog, there's a little ">>" on the far right, which expands out to give a "Floating" and a "Debug" page. the "Floating" configuration lets you adjust the policy for launching applications in floating mode
Chris Gadzinski
@MagneticDuck
also, a pseudo-bug report: when I ask Amethyst to throw a window to another "Desktop" (also called "space" or something), it just shifts it one desktop to the right or left!
like if this window is currently in Desktop 1 and I hit option-control-shift-6, it ends up in Desktop 2
I have to do that 4 more times until it ends up in Desktop 6
Chris Gadzinski
@MagneticDuck
(MacOS Big Sur. latest MacBook Pro. Amethyst 0.15.4. everything up-to-date.)
Chris Gadzinski
@MagneticDuck
hmm... but about the preferences for automatically floating applications, it would be nice if the window title restrictions supported regex or some sort of globbing, no?
I mean, it's a bit of a fragile way to filter windows, but eh
concretely, I'd like Finder "Info" windows (command-I) to not tile
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
There is an open issue for regex. It would be easy to add, but would be good to get help with.
Do you have the preference for organizing spaces based on usage enable? Like the macOS system one.
I forget where it is.
Chris Gadzinski
@MagneticDuck
yes, I had that on. turning it off makes throw-to-workspace work properly, thanks

@bzreinhardt
Hi, Amethyst has become a critical piece of my workflow (I use it to see a bunch of text windows at once) and randomly stopped working on the application I use it for (Bear) - it seems to work with other applications. Any hunches about what's going on? (MacOS Catalina. Amethyst 0.15.4.)
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
I’m unfamiliar with Bear.
Could be they changed how they create their windows or something.
Benjamin Reinhardt
@bzreinhardt
Perhaps! Though I don't think it updated
David Van Isacker
@Dvisacker
Hi i'm on a Macbook Pro 2016 (Big Sur) and amethyst is working well except for google chrome which seems to ignore the tiling. I tried toggling the floating on chrome but this doesn't seem to change anything. Is this a known issue or something encountered by anyone before or is there a way to debug what is happening ? Google Chrome is up to date, and it works well with firefox.
Thanks :):)
David Van Isacker
@Dvisacker
solved actually! for the record, the fix is to assign chrome to a display in the dock
Benjamin Reinhardt
@bzreinhardt
@Dvisacker That solved my problem too!
You're a genius
Max Kieltyka
@mxkyb
Hello :) What exactly does "increase / decrease main pane count" do?
Max Kieltyka
@mxkyb
oh. it is how many windows there are inside of the space, that is filled by the main window, if the pane count is 1, right?
ok i tested it and that is it. well, sorry for the spam
Ian Ynda-Hummel
@ianyh
No worries.
Glad you got it working.
Will Sheldon
@willsheldon
Is anyone else having issues on Big Sur? Small window auto float seems to be broken for me. e.g. Evernote's top bar dropdown window (for entering quick notes) never used to be detected, but now is. Additionally, I can't seem to find it's window title to exclude it. Also finder file copy dialogs are now being detected and arranged :(
ReedMLokken
@ReedMLokken
Big fan of the binary space partitioning. Three requests: option to remove rounded corners and if possible fullscreen within the partition. Second, auto float for dialogue boxes (currently opens blank partition with dialogue hovering over application) and partitions that match the size of non-resizable windows.
