@takluyver heh: i read the body of register_events to figure out my approach. i guess the naming of the method didn't jump out at me as being the thing that i wanted...
also, in my case, handsontable re-implements focus, so focus/blur are not the actual events that signal it desire to own the keyboard

It comes from a random IPython owner, due to the API keys that are hooked up - seems to be Paul or Brian most of the time.
