Does anyone know if we removed the %paste magic?
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 17:58
@jdfreder we didn't, but it's only in the plain terminal interface - is that why you're missing it?
In the notebook and the Qt console, you can just paste using normal methods
it's only needed in the terminal because it messes with autoindent

Ah yes

How does %paste work if done remotely?
oh nevermind
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 18:06
if you ssh in and start ipython?
Kyle Kelley
@rgbkrk
Sep 27 2014 18:06
oh durr
I read your message wrong
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 18:06
heh - yeah, it wouldn't work remotely

I think %paste from the notebook should prompt the user to hit their variation of ctrl-v
or spawn clippy on the screen

@takluyver I have another question
'%cpaste -r' re-executes the block previously entered by cpaste.
Wth does it mean by re-executing ?
:(
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 18:49
when you paste code in, it executes it
it also stores it, so if you do %cpaste -r, it will run what you previously pasted again
Jonathan Frederic
@jdfreder
Sep 27 2014 18:50
ahhh!
got it
so
Jon types this in a text editor and copies it: 1;
bad example
print "hello world"
then %cpaste
it will paste that and then execute it
then I do %cpaste -r
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 18:52
%cpaste gives you a non-indenting space to paste code in yourself
and then when you put -- on a line by itself, it returns you to IPython and executes the code you gave it
Jonathan Frederic
@jdfreder
Sep 27 2014 18:52
So then you ctrl-shift-v to paste in your code?
ahh got it
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 18:52
but yes, %cpaste -r will then run print "hello world" a second time
yep
cpaste can be used over ssh, whereas %paste will try to get the clipboard on the server instead of your local clipboard

ipython/ipython#6563
Wondering if there is a displayhook defined only for terminal IPython
Jonathan Frederic
@jdfreder
Sep 27 2014 20:53
nvm
answer is no
I don't think the solution for this issue is easy
Thomas Kluyver
@takluyver
Sep 27 2014 21:24
@jdfreder no, there isn't
I also don't think it's easy
Someone labeled the issue 'quickfix', which I think was rather optimistic
I guess it seems like something that should be easy to fix.
